Water Spot Etching coming back?

I did a thorough detail on my Z06 that I picked up back in March (thread here: http://www.autopia.org/forum/showthread.php?t=127748 ).



I addressed the water spot etching with my PC, orange CCS pad, Menzerna PO85RD 3.02, and patience. At the time, this combination took care of most marring and the water spot etching. You can see in the pics below that the defect removal went pretty well, not 100%, but good enough for what I was trying to accomplish.



After a few weeks, the same etching marks came back. My questions are:



1. Why did the spots come back?

2. Does Menzerna have a tendency to fill?

3. Should I have done a 50/50 IPA wipedown after polishing?

4. Will the PC/burgundy pad/M105 combo take care of the etching permanetly?

5. What am I doing wrong?!



Yesterday I polished this area with the PC, Megs Burgandy pad, and M105. Again, it appears that the etching was taken care of. I did a IPA wipedown this time and the etching did not come back. I will keep an eye out in the next few weeks for them to reappear.



Help! Any advice would be appreciated!

There was a LOT of heated discussion about whether Menzerna products have fillers/maskers in them. The general consensus is yes, even though the company and their US representative Jeff Silver say no.



I think it ended up with some people getting banned from Autopia by the previous owner because Menzerna had been a sponsor here. Hopefully nothing like that will happen with the new ownership.

M105 should do a remarkably better job, but you will need to finish down with a finer polish like M205 or something with less cut. PO85 3.02 would probably work OK for that though it's still a 'heavier' polishing product.

Huh? I remember the arguments, but I don't remember anyone getting banned over them nor do I remember Menzerna being a sponsor...in fact I remember the Menz rep getting in trouble for posting since he WASN'T a sponsor...maybe THAT's who got banned.

I was pretty sure that a number of members got banned for arguing with Jeff Silver over the whole thing. It's been a couple years, but I seem to remember TH0001 being one to go. SuperBee voluntarily left (but came back).



That said, I guess it was more speculation than anything about Menzerna being a sponsor, it wasn't directly advertised as such but it sure seemed like DavidB sided with Jeff on the whole debacle, and without impartiality in the matter one has to wonder if there was an exchange of money at some point.

I guess the lesson of the story is to first do a test spot and to check one's polishing progress with a IPA wipedown. You would then know how much paint correction you were actually achieving. At this point there's no way to know whether the 85RD actually removed the spots or not, and it really doesn't matter. All that matters now is to find the right polish and pad combination to remove them now.



My life is an ongoing battle with water spots. I'm usually at the losing end of the contest.
