water runoff

I spoke with my local city stormwater department and they advised that i had to clean up my wastewater if i detailed cars in parking lots. They advised i could use sand bags around the storm drains and then use a shop vac to get up the water. Does anyone else have any ideas that i could use or explain your clean up process? Thanks!

One of the reasons I quit moblie detailing. They make a trailer I have seen to pull the car up onto it, dwtail it and the trailer reclaims the water.

I guess that I am not a tree hugger but I am interested where it is that the storm drain department is requiring this of you. could it be california...?

I think almost everywhere won't let anything but rain go down storm drains... seems a little extreme to me, but if its the law, we gotta go by it...

You could use a wash mat or the vacu boom to reclaim your water . http://www.vacuboom.com/ If you use the vacu boom you'll need a holding tank to pump into.

You would be better berming the drains and allowing the water to evaporate or filtering the solids and oil, then discharging onsite. When you pick up water and transport it,you are carrying what the DOT considers "hazardous waste".
If you filter the water of oil and solids you can then discharge it to a grass or landscaped area on property. This can be accomplished with drain berms, oil booms, a small canister filter w/mesh screen and a sump pump. The water is the property owners and it should be kept on their site if at all possible.
I literally just got of the phone with a guy from Az. who is an authority on reclaim issues that face mobile detailers and pressure washers, these are the facts as he eplained them,he's been in business for over 20 yrs and helped write the book on reclaim the southwest. The conversation was very educational.
