Wasted Souveran

This hasn't been an issue in the past I guess purely because of cost. However when my Souveran loses chunks of product from the uppermost inside edge of the wax inside the container I get more concerned. Part of the problem imo is the diameter of the can is too small. Because it is smaller than the diameter of the applicator I use the wax inside the container tends to build up high on the sides with a pit in the middle.

What is a good way to prevent this?

I haven't used quite enough of mine to have this problem, but I do something that MIGHT help. I store the foam pad I use to apply it inside the can - it fits nicely (one of the meguiar's 4-in-a-pak foam hand pads) - and it stays nicely soft with souveran. It is possible that this would also help to keep those edges moist, and to gather wax from the edges as they move down.

Hey carguy,

I haven't done this but it has been mentioned before that sometimes when people leave foam applicators in their wax contianers that the pads will sometimes rot. Not sure how much of an issue this is for you waxing weekly, but it's worth mentioning.

I haven't done this with my Souveran yet but I have with tins of Blitz: Use a little rubber spatula to scoop the stray wax and wipe it on the applicator.

I use this technique to apply paste waxes to buffer bonnets and it works fine. Gotta use all that valuable Souveran. :D

Actually, I dont think the concern is applicator rot..who cares about a cheap applicator?

The biggest concern is that your applicator absorbs a lot of the solvents in the wax, making it brittle and hard to apply over time. Bottom line, storing the applicator in the wax tin is a no-no!

Thanks for the pointer. I never store them in the wax containers anyhow, I used to but I thought I lost them all and went out and bought new ones, as I start opening all my wax containers I started to find them all. I have too many wax containers that I never use.

you bring up a good point, the search to make a container that caters to preventing this

(the waterless ketchup bottle spout thingy didn't work very well)

anways maybe if the wax came up like a big thing of wide chapstick and then you could dial it in and take the amount you need and then back it down

or maybe instead of making the inside of the container cylindrical they could make it more conical, that way you could reach the edges better

BTW, I cut the rough edges off my applicator, maybe you can cut it fit better.

well enough brainstorming, gotta go to bed sometime :)

How'd you manage this? Aren't your applicators the usual type of 2 pices of foam melted together at the edges? I cut the edges off of one and was left with 2 pieces of foam. Perhaps it works to just barely cut off enough of it?

I've had problems with Souveran chunking and clumping also. I smoothed it all down and put it in the freezer. I don't know if it helped any, but it makes one hell of a Pina Colada!!!

I cut it off, it was solid piece, now I only cut about a half a cm at most around the whole edge, maybe I didn't get to the part where it splits. I just redid it now, it's solid.

Ok I just cut mine and it feel apart (it stays in 1 solid pc if I don't get to the splitting part like Steve said). If it fell apart, instead of throwing it to the trashcan, do you guys just use the bottom half anyway? I went ahead and applied BF with the 'half applicator' on the hood and fender and seems ok... Might be a little easier to fall out your hand but if you are careful shouldn't be problem.

What is the melting point?? If you put it in the oven? I now this could be risky because of fumes and danger of explosion. I know, because at work I had an oven bearing heater blow up on be. So I'm extracautious here. Perhaps a water bath with boiling water. Setting the can in it?? Just curious. My can of Collinite Fleetwax will have the same problem.

William420, I have to use to halves of my sponge now too, but it looks a little diffferent for mine ;)

I figured I'd sacrifice one of mine just to see. Oh well, it's solid through and through. Guess all sponges are not created equal. I also cut the edges off in this picture (before cutting it in half).
