Wash + Wax, 30+ S2000s

Just thought I'd share some photos from last Sunday's Wash & Wax meet that a couple of the guys from S2ki.com put together in tandem with Criswell Honda in Germantown, MD. This is the second such meet I've been to and the best turnout yet. We filled every open bay and then some.

I didn't really do anything to my car (QD wipedown) but helped a few folks with paint problems and LSP application. It was fun. Here's a few photos...

and an A-spec... hot! Getting Zaino'd:

I saw some good work being done, I saw some terrible work being done... More than a couple folks were SLATHERING wax on, but hey... they didn't ask for my help, sooo... I just polished up a few things with the PC and with the rotary... Made for more than a few oooohs and ahhhhs :D

One guy had a pretty banged up looking front bumper from a flying hubcap - been that was since 2 days after he got the car. Hit it for a couple of minutes with the PC and spot pad and GONE - mostly paint transfer. He was astounded. :spot

Great fun, but I didn't get much in the way of before and afters, or even cars I did work on, but I thought I'd share anyway. Great dealer.

How did it work with that many cars in a small area and washing them? Were there hoses for each car? Also a description of other horrible work would be good for $hits and giggles :D

They actually have a 3-car wash bay with hoses and buckets and (gasp!) wash "brooms". Wash the car in the bay, then drive it out to dry it and detail it.

I guess in terms of "bad" stuff - basically just watching people use dirty rags, using a cotton rag to wash with or using one mitt, over the whole car in one pass... There was judicious use of NXT Insane Shine (ugh! can't stand the smell of that stuff!) on tires... which isn't necessarily bad, but we're talking dripping off the tires... Chamois and beach towels for drying... etc etc... Basically all the stuff that people who THINK they're taking care of their cars do and us, as OCD Autopians, wouldn't think of doing.

I can honestly say that among the cars I took a good close look at (most newer than mine) my first model year (2000) with 80k miles looked about the best in terms of a near-perfect swirl-free finish... Aside from the black one set up for sale by the dealership... :) And I've barely polished any of my car out :) Not to say there weren't other Autopians or Autopians-in-training there, but this is just what stood out in my mind.

I even got to see dealer installation of swirls as they prepped a customer's car :D Kidding, kidding! They're surprisingly good about prep there - I know one of their detailers and they make a solid effort to prep the cars properly. They were using a PC to quickly apply a glaze or wax to a gold Accord and I'm sure they did a good job - it's a production environment, so they don't have the luxury that most of us do as OCD detailers :)

I'd love to conduct a detailing seminar, actually, so I might approach the organizers about doing so. The wash bay itself is very un-glamourous - it's just an area carved out with drains in the floor.

BigT: this was an S2000-only meet. It just so happens that one of the good friends of the organizer drives that TL :) I asked about bringing the WRX wagon since it'd be easier to haul all my gear, but I was told I'd have to park outside if I drove that, so I jammed the S2000 full of only the minimal supplies I'd need (and it was still packed) to focus on polishing and finishing.

Its OK, I would park my TL outside, it's already clean anyway. I would just be interested in learning new techniques, especially how to properly use a rotary.

Looks like you had a real good time. Never seen a hood like the one on the Red S2000. Looks good though...

Yeah, I hadn't seen that before, either. It's a Mastercraft fiberglass good - very heavy, but looks very cool. He had a very Ferrari look going on with the hood (like a 550) and the painted headlight interiors (like a 360). Nice looking.
