wash mitt proposal

okay here's the plan....

I spend sooo much time rinsing every little speck of dirt (they ley down cinders on snowy roads in the winter) out of my mitt inbetween each swipe of my mitt (I never swipe one area more than once with a dirty mitt) that I'm trying to adopt a new plan.

I usually go in this order, hood, top, trunk then upper panel left and right then front, back, then lower panels left and right (my favorite new brush for the lower rough plastic valences).

so that totals 8 panels

so effectively I can use one swipe of 4 mitts both sides and get my whole car all without rinsing my mit and just dunking in the soap. So I will use a second bucket to drop in the "used" mitt (maybe separating the lower panel ones)

BTW when I use a mitt I sorta fold it in half and roll it as I'm swiping as to reduce the amount of dirt rubbing against the paint then I turn it over, literally swiping with each clean side once.

All in all, I would use the same amount of soap because it would be from the same one bucket.

And then I could just rinse once at the end (even in the warmth of the inside). I might also even save water on rinsing since I could do it all at once.

what do ya think?

usual autopian skeptics (whenever something new or different is introduced) feel free to comment :p (they don't make a sarcastic smirk to post)

Takes me 1.5-4 hours to wash, depending on vehicle condition and post-wash plans.

I actually use 3 mitts each time I wash my car: 1 for above the belt, 1 for below and 1 for the plastic trim below the lower panels.

Your telling me your going to use 4 mitts man? Jeepers, I don't know, one mitt for the cleaner parts of the car and one for the dirty parts.

My car is always clean to the point where I can use one mitt and I just need to dunk it after every panel in the bucket, my car is never that dirty.

Steve, I don't know, I think two mitts are enough. 4 is overkill for overkill :nixweiss

Ever try a sponge? They don't "hold on" to every little speck of dirt. Rinse and shake and squeeze, and they are dirt free, ready to wash again.

Is there any evidence that sponges actually scratch your car? If so, I'd like to see it. I've been using a sponge on my car lately, but it was so scratched from the previous owners 5 years of ownership that I probably wouldn't be able to readily tell. However, I've used it on black cars with no visable scratching.

Prove me wrong... I don't want to scratch as much you don't want to.

Well I just think about it and don't have any desire to use a sponge. UNLESS I can get one of those sea sponges and I hear that some sand is still trapped in them  which makes it even worse.

Think of a sponge, unless you have a nice sea sponge; it is going to "push" the dirt along the paint with it, with the mitts they are made with very loose interweaved threads so they would pick the dirt up more than push it. It doesn't literally pick it up to the middle of the mitt but the dirt doesn't stay on the face of the sponge where it has direct contact with the clear coat.

So in other words, mitts are not the fail safe alternative, they are just a little safer ............ depending on what type you use.

sponges technically (the automotive ones at least) don't scratch paint

to a cd test on one, the cd will remain scratch free (it's made out of the same stuff we all use to apply wax)

The mitts best point is their fall point - they catch dirt particles and don't let go. It is very possible that they will touch your paint eventually.

Sponges are made up of hundreds/thousands of small pores, which grab the dirt and bring them into the pores. If you are using proper soap and water, it will not scratch the paint.

how about using as many mitts as it takes to not have to rinse your mitts until the very end of the whole washing

you're always dipping a new mitt into your bucket

(refer to the first post for the "proposal" on how I would achieve this)

Yeah, Steve needs to get out of the MF business and into the wash mitt one.

We'll need two group buys; one for Steve and the other for everyone else.

Just teasin' ya, buddy.

Hey, i am not no speed detailer or anything but 1.5-4 hours to wash a car. I can lick the car clean faster then that:D

:D

NY detailer, do you think that by using enough mitts so that you wouldn't have to rinse any of them while washing, would you wash a car in less time?

i have 3 things i wash the car with

2- sheepskin mitts, one for the car and one for the wheels

1- hog hair wheel brush

I have never had a problem with dirt, wash one panel, did it in the bucket rinse it off wash again.

I just make sure that i clean the mitt everytime i start a new car.

I never had a problem.

Your idea might work, but i would need alot of wash mitts as on weekends i can do around 6-7 full details.

I know, I'm just putting it out there because it takes me longer to rinse the mitt then it does to make a single pass.

My proposal has me at 4 to do 8 panels.

can anyone source me some discounted mitts?

sent to Viking. Steve you can stock up on Viking 100% cotton chenille mitts.

mdilthey@schtre.com

E-mail them for info, the minimum order is $500 though.
