Waffel Weave - wha happened to em?

It seems like my WW's don't soak up water any more??? I washed them with dye free perfume free detergent and no dryer sheets when drying but they don't seem to sponge up the water anymore???

Anyone else noticed this?
 
do they push the water around? I've found a mist of S&W or QD helps the towel absorb water off the car, as it moistens the WW...
 
No I haven't. My towels have been snagged and threads pulled but they never stopped soaking up water. Interesting.
 
While it was not a waffle weave, I did have a similar problem with a terry MF. It didn't seem to be absorbing the S&W, but I just used another one and after the "problem one" was washed again, it seemed to be OK. I'm guessing that in my case I washed it with something else that contaminated it. Like maybe some that had been used for sealant removal or QDing. I have not had the problem since. You might want to try washing them again to see if that helps. Also, is the "dye free, perfume free detergent" the same detergen you have used in the past? Didn't happen to use a double measure of detergent with one load?

I have heard this situation a variety of times, and after personally speaking with a major MF Manufacturer in Korea, they have advised people to boil thier MF for 10 minutes. I know this sounds crazy, but somehow or another, your fibers have gotten clogged up. By all means, you will not be breaking down the fibers or anything. Give it a try and report back to us...BE CAREFUL NOT TO BURN YOURSELF!

So that would me you could wash them in hot water in the wash machine and have no problem.
 
Heather told me about this. Make sure to run cold water into the pot for a couple minutes to cool it down after boiling!!!!!!!!!!
 
groe: I was gonna make a post about the same thing!

I soaked all of my MF towels today in a pretty strong concentration of MF wash and HOT water for about an hour. I let it sit in the washer, then after my 1 hour timer went off, I finished the cycle. They came out smelling absoutely neutral and hopefully they will not "bead/push" water around now. I will report back once I give em a shot.

FWIW: I washed towels that were already "clean". After the hour soak, the water was definately soiled.

If this fails, I will give Nick's regimen a shot :)

If the fibre’s have become clogged and the towel is not performing the way it used to add a teaspoon per towel distilled white vinegar, the vinegar doesn't coat the fibres but instead works to eliminate detergent residue. Vinegar (Acetic acid, pH=2) works well in the rinse cycle to make your towels softer. Detergent is an alkaline (pH=12, the opposite of acidic on the pH scale).

When you wash your towels (or anything for that matter) there are small amounts of detergent left behind, when your add Vinegar it balances the pH of the solution and helps removes the excess detergent from the wash. Do not wash micro fibre cloths / towels with other non- micro fibre fabrics, as they will pick up lint from other fabrics. For badly stained towels pre-soak the Microfiber towels before washing, to help release dirt.
