It's been a while since I had time to do a write up on my detailing projects. I figured now's a quick chance to do a basic write up and show some of the work I performed on this brand new Volvo XC90. This truck only had a few miles on it, but had some wash induced marring, dents, and random scratches (RDS). But like most of the new XC90's that I have detailed, they were all in pretty good shape. Definitely one of the nicer trucks to hit the market lately, and the paint is pretty good. Much better than many other new vehicles. Still has significant orange peel and low paint readings, around 70-80 microns total film thickness. But easy to work with and finish down on allowing me to get a fantastic amount of paint correction completed in about 8 hours of polishing time.
As you can see below, the truck was dropped off in the middle of a snow storm here on Long Island. I began by decontaminating the paint with Iron-X, followed by CarPro Reset in a foam cannon and the 2 bucket method. Wheels, tires, and wheel wells were cleaned with 3D Yellow Degreaser at about 1:12 ratio. 24 degrees and heavy Long Island snow can't stop me from detailing.
The paint defects were a bit difficult to light up. Normal lights and even LED Pen's barely showed anything. But take a good, single LED lamp 4500k at about 45 degree angle, and you can see the wash induced marring. These defects could have easily been missed in the hands of a detailer with incorrect lighting. You could NOT see this with those multi-led lamps that you get from Home Depot. Car looked perfect under most lighting conditions. The paint was average to a bit hard requiring Shine Supply Flat Top on a Buff n Shine Yellow to begin making a dent into the defects while not sacrificing too much clear coat. But as you can see, the paint correction went well and the swirls were removed from the paint.
Now onto the preparation and paint coating. This client went with Opti-Coat Pro on the paint, Opti-Glass Pro on the exterior glass, and Opti-Coat Pro on the wheels to allow for easier maintenance and a nice clean satin luster. Opti-Coat Pro was applied in about 12cc's total, leaving 3cc's for the wheels which cut it close. I had to end up opening another syringe to get full coverage. Don't mind the brake dust inside the barrel, I moved the car started to take a picture, then realized I dropped a ton of dust into the barrel. The wheels were re-prepped using Optimums' new Paint Prep which is amazing. Works really well, cuts oil away, and leaves the paint tacky and ready for application. No streaking, no scratching, just clean bare surfaces. Also, I highly recommend to coat the wheels prior to applying tire dressing, that made for a really slow coating process to avoid getting PDMS on the applicator.
And now onto the completed detail pictures. This Volvo XC90 wound up getting the entire detailing works. Opti-Coat Pro protecting all exterior surfaces and Opti-Glass Pro on all exterior glass providing the client with years of protection. Pro ceramic coatings like Opti-Coat Pro are only available through certified detailers such as Xclusive Autoworks Inc. of Long Island, NY.
