Well guys, its maintainence time again.

The other day I changed out my fuel filter and wanted to change out all the fluids including,

1. Oil change

2. fuel system cleaner

3. Antifreeze

4. Transmission

I was thinking about going with the whole Vavoline Max life line because my car is starting to age and right now its pretty much free. Does anyone have experience with this line. Im also not sure if I should change my Oil rating from 10/30 to something else. I do alot of stop and go driving and live in Florida. Also does anyone ever add a fuel additive to clean the engine when the do oil changes?

Common you auto mechanic gooroos, Help me out?

1. Oil change -- Castrol GTX high mileage w/ motorcraft or purolator filter

2. fuel system cleaner-- Cheveron Techron

3. Antifreeze- whatever, brand not much different

4. Transmission- Valvoline should be fine

10W-30? depends on vehicle/engine/climate

Be careful what you use in the trans and radiator of your Honda product. From all that I have read, it's best to use the Honda fluids for these two things.

I was originally going to do all Max Life to my truck, but talking to a couple of mechanics, it seems all it does is "band-aid" future problems to come. Its also interesting to note that on the back of Max Life and other high mileage oils, they don't have the API Service SL, Energy Conserving doughnut. I think its way more important to keep up with maintence, change oil+filter every 3,000 miles, than to worry about different kinds of oils.

Hey Bill,

Thanks for that site. It completely answered my question on oil additives.

I just bought a bottle of that stuff over at Pepboys and was going to use it on my next oil change. They told me it was a good engine treatment. What a headace that would have been.

I should have know better than to listen to someone at pepboys but I guess that is why I asked the question about oil additives on here.

The really scarry thing is he told me they use that stuff on most cars they do oil changes on. :scared

How many miles on your engine ? I see a few TL owners with 150,000+ and they're still using Mobil 1 Syn with no probs. This place will do an analysis of your oil. I haven't tried it yet. Looked interesting though.

I agree with Spoiled Man on the Honda Tranny fluid and LouisanaJeeper on the Cheveron Techron:xyxthumbs

I'll third the advice about Honda fluids. I recently changed my gf's ATF, all the official literature says Honda ATF only, so we got that, things are doing very well :up

Yep, she uses Chevron Techron I believe about every oil change.

I'm not certain if its for the jets or whole fuel system but Chevron gas stations have Techron in the gas so this leads me to believe it's for the whole system. Too bad no Chevrons around here :(

yeah, but what do i have to do? order it though the dealer?

Hey, my cars a 1995 integra, still runs pretty good, it just has some hesitation and shakes a bit around 80. I agree with you about always using honda fluids but I dont want it to be a hassle and cost a fortune to change out my fluids.

They are available at your local dealer. I have read horror stories about using tranny fluid other than OEM on www.vtec.net. You can take a look over there if you like. It may be more in the short run but these are the two fluids that you change the least.

Just use a good quality oil and you'll be fine. Remember that most Honda/Acura vehicles with manual transmissions ask for motor oil as transmission lubrication (usually 10w30). The only Honda specific fluids you really need to use are power steering fluid, and ATF if your car is so equipped.

Definitely check out Bobistheoilguy, there is a wealth of great information there.

I use all Honda fluids for everything but oil and antifreeze and washer fluid.

When I change my oil in my teg, I do Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5W-30 and I add a bottle of Chevron Techron to the fuel as well. When I add the CT, I use the bottle directions (go to gas station with 1/4 tank or less, add CT, then fill up). BTW: I use a Honda Oil Filter as well. No problems here at 86k miles.

Gsr are your oil filters Nippon. I saw a set of four on ebay for only 12.00 plus shipping. They say there authentic just for hondas.

That's what I have my gf using :up

Just remember everyone, do keep all of your receipts when DIYing, something happened to her upper engine block (?), some kind of fluke, and needed replacing. If we were unable to swiftly fax over receipts and records of the service Honda told us they probably wold not have honored the warranty.

And also, please consider filling this out:

Acura, I'm using it in my truck and I like it. It feels good in the engine to me, although I'm not an auto-expert. Also there's a good rebate on Maxlife now so the price is definitely right.

There's a free ebook on the net called the Motor Oil Bible which is VERY comprehensive. Lots of data...so much you can probably drown in it, but it does have some good charts for quick reference and the author rates many oils numerically. Bottom line according to MOB, the best oils to use are the synthetics. Amsoil rated #1, Mobil 1 2nd.
