Anybody used a DA polisher (w/ clay attachment) for claying their car? Worth the effort/cost (of the attachment)?

I have this attachment and my opinion is that it is not worth buying. May be just my experience, but I could never get the clay to stay in the holder. So, now I just clay by hand and the clay attachment just sits in my pad container.

Maybe I am just paranoid, but I fear something getting stuck in the clay and tearing up the paint with the power of the PC.

Use your hand instead of the PC.
Why change somethign that works well, and its so easy.

Good Luck
Claude :D

P.S. As Pink would say "You and Your Hand"

If you ever come accross a huge overspray job, you'll kick yourself for not having a clay pad. It's saved my arse on many occasions. Yes, it does increase marring, but makes up for all the time being saved. If you don't plan on doing these types of removals, it's not a must have.

Great point David! I think that every product has a need (with in reason of course). For the enthusiast who wants to clean his car or the professional who works on most average cars claying with a machine is not going to enough advantage in speed to offset the much higher chance of marring the paint.

But, as David menionted, in over spray removal jobs (which generally are going to require heavy machine polishing afterwards) the added chance of marring is second seat to the speed at which the job is done.

I once did a 3/4 ton Suburban that was the work truck for a guy that went to car dealers to do "touch-ups" damn thing was white and I didn't catch that it was covered in overspray when I picked it up (at night). I spent the weekend with wool pads and Optimum hyper and then foam with regular Optimum - just to get that thing to shine again. That was back in my makita days, today, I think I'd just wet sand, Power Gloss and then 203 with my Flex.

I have to go with what David and Todd on this one. For those big job's ( oversprays )then yes get one, but if your doing your own ride then use your hand with your clay..........

I personally think the "clay pad" is a gimmick to make money. Most of us no when you clay, you DO NOT apply pressure. And you DO NOT use the clay like an eraser. You add ALOT of lubricant and glide/slide the clay across the surface with one or two fingers so it can pick up containements (spelling?)

Now just think, take the weight of your polisher and put that with/on clay...yea, you are gonna scratch. Then you have another job to do...removeing swirl marks and scratches.

stick with the hand application. works everytime but also remember...when you clay, most clay REMOVES wax:scared::D, so you are gonna have to wax afterwards.

You don't apply pressure? Have I been doing it wrong all this time? :scared:

I would say "Very Light Pressure". I would definitely not use moderate to heavy pressure.

I think you're running the risk of "grinding" the contamenants back into the paint! :scared: [Cringe!]
