Guys,

so I used Meg Scratch-x by hand with a clean MF on a section on the hood to remove some water spots and now, when I look at it an angle in the sun, the clear coat doesn't look exaclty the same as the rest. It's has what I would describe as a very slight haze. Not quite wrils mark like but defintely different that the crisp shine on the rest of the hood. So what did I do wrong and will i make it worse if I use the orbital now? I thought scratch-x is clear coat safe. (I have a blue BMW). :help:

Well it might be that the rest has wax on it that you removed, but I would say you didnt work it in all the way.

ScratchX is a diminishing abrasive, meaning the longer you work it in, the finer of a polish it becomes. I have used it in the past and you really have to work it in until its basically invisible. Otherwise, you will be left with haze.

Think of it as a compound, that then turns into a finishing polish.

Try it again take a pic of the area and amount youre using (you may be using too much or too little) and make sure to work it in all the way. If you really work it in and let it get to a finer abrasive, it will leave a nice shine.

Do what Setec said. Now that you have abraded away the water spots, you must follow this up by polishing the area back to it's original shine. Don't keep wiping the area thinking it's gonna shine on its own. Polish it with with your orbital and use a finishing polish. The your Bimmer will shine again.

Im tellin you you can use scratchx as a finishing polish if you work it in all the way, it gradually gets finer.

If you do have an rbital then go ahead you can do it that way but I guarantee you you can get scratchx to leave a very nice shine if you use it properly. It takes longer to fully break down then you may think.

i would go with what these guys said, buff out till its clear - but i had a similar situation

i was trying to polish my friend's red single stage mr2. used paint prep to get out all the excess wax/etc. long story short - ended up polishing with OC and an edge yellow pad to get out major swirls, and finishing with OP and a polishing pad. the swirls were gone, but the finish didnt have the right shine(almost hazy, had no pop - even after a finishing polish + pad). can anybody offer any suggestions on this?

:thx in advance

p.s. sorry about the hijack!

I’ve never seen ScratchX leave any kind of marring.

It could also be from your mf towels. Some scratch sensitive finishes will be swirled just by mf. Some mf towels will swirl any finish if you push hard on them. Actually, any towel can swirl a finish if you press hard enough.

I’d try it with a foam applicator.

PC.

I would switch from the microfiber to a foam pad also. Your microfiber (when pushed with the effort needed for scratch x) can be leaving mircoscopic scratches that quickly add up as you push into the surface, abrading the fibers against the clear coat. These super tiny scratches (called micromarring) can lead to a precieved haze.
