I saw one of those foam pads with a cut out section in it where you put your car clay and form it to the hole and then clay the car with the PC 7424. Does anyone here have input on this whether it would be a good idea or not to clay a car this way? I have never clayed a car, but my 7424 will be delivered tomorrow, and i already have the clay. Please advise. here is the link on this:

thanks.

I would NOT do this. If you get one little chuck of anything in between the clay and the paint you coudl do damage that could be almost unrepairable. Stick to the by hand method, its much safer.

:yeah
If anything gets in there you're talking a full day with a heavy compound and a rotary, not a fun thing in the name of speed. Even if you don't trap anything in there I'd have to assume that it would cause some marring. It would also need a TON of lube to stay slick, and you can do serious damage that way. Also, it would impart heat into the clay. If you've ever clayed a dark red car in full sun you'll understand why this is a bad thing, the clay actually breaks down and becomes basically useless.

Although you can do everything else by machine I would suggest that you do the claying step by hand. It's relatively safe, but if you're not paying attention you can do damage that you'd cry to think about.

would not recomend, as the others have said all it takes is one small piece of anything to get into the clay and you could do severe damage. You won't feel the drag if there isn't enough lube, So I will definately stick to doing it by hand.

I also don't see where the time savings is you still have to take the clay out to knead it, so instead of just kneading it you have to take it out of the pad knead it and then get it set back into the pad before you go back to claying.
