UPS employees?

Anybody here work for UPS, any position?

I applied at the beginning of this year and took the tour of the warehosue but I was unable to get the job because class conflicted with being able to do 5-10 each night. I'm thinking of applying again this fall because it seems like a great job with good benefits. I don't know if it's a national thing, but the hub I'm applying at starts $8.50/hr package handler, and the possibility of trying for a sorter job within 3 months which takes you to $10.50/hr. The job looks hard as it can get though, but it seems like a job where I can work my way up and by the time I graduate I can hopefully grab a career.

I seem to learn a lot on Autopia, so I figure why not this..

I've always heard those entry level jobs at UPS are really hard work, but the pay is good. UPS is employee owned now, and in my opinion has the best service of the big package delivery companies, which I'm always impressed with since it's a Teamster's operation.

Very hard physical job. My cousin started out at an entry level and eventually moved up. He's been with them for like 15 years now. Just a few years ago he was able to transfer to a closer location. His commute is now like 20 mintutes as opposed to his initial 1 and 1/2 hour.

Hey, Ive been with UPS for near 4 years now. Starting out the work is definately hard. I would suggest finding a nice cinderblock and lifting it and lowering it from a table to the floor at a rate of 350 times per hour for a good feel of what loading a truck will be like. Make sure to wear a nice sweatshirt to simulate what it will feel like inside a truck thats been sealed up all day in the searing sun. If you make it past that, then UPS is for you. That said, it is indeed a good job with benefits for part time employees that surpass most any employer. Id say sure, go ahead and reapply. They are constantly hiring....the turnover is attrocious. The good people get taken advantage of while the union protects the sorry people just the same. That is just my perspective from a management position, so take it however you like. Either way, good luck.

Well, that sounds like a typical union environment...it's just that oddly enough, around here, the UPS drivers are the most courteous, helpful, and their performance seems the best (particularly service-wise, customer service too). FedEx, which used to be the gold standard...we have had some rude (to put it kindly) "couriers", atrocious service, and if you have problem, calling them is like yelling into a hole. Most of the other carriers seem, while not purposely difficult like FedEx, to be indifferent, while the UPS organization really seems interested in getting the job done. There may be some regional/local factors here, and most of the really good UPS drivers seem to be the ones who have been there forever (our pickup guy at work, who is retiring this year, was the drop off guy in 1978).

I've found that my local UPS guy is the man, whereas UPS as a whole sucks the big one. A friend of my mom's recently settled a big sexual discrimination suit against them, and they always seem to take 5 f-ing days to deliver a package that FedEx can handle in two. On the other hand, my local FedEx guy is a lil weird, to put it nicely.

UPS is unionized?? I just watched Hoffa the other day, and there have been big issues in Houston with the Teamsters so I can't say I think much of unions. I have always heard as well that starting positions with UPS were ball breaking.

Their IPO was in 1999; IIRC they were heavily into ESOP before that.

employee owneed doesn't mean it's not public. United airlines is employee owned and they are publicly traded as well.

all employee owned means is that the employees, or usually some holding company, control the majority of shares of the company. it doesn't need to be 100% ownership, just more than 50%.

If it was totally employee owned they couldn't raise any capital by selling issuing stocks.

UPS, FedEx both have great career growth potential as long as you're willing to stick to it. good luck

Yes, I realize that. What I was saying is that IIRC, before they went public, they had an aggressive ESOP, meaning that there would still be a lot of risk-sharers working for the company.

The HR guy said they promote from within the company and everyone starts out at the bottom, but I'm not sure if it applies to driving positions too. Your best bet would be to call your local UPS HR dept.

I stand corrected

From Hoover's; Managers, employees, retirees, and the founders' families own 90% of UPS and control 99% of the voting power.

Publicly traded, Employee owned.

Good Luck Truzoom, hope you get the job.
