Update on DACP Haze.. Menzerna did help...

So I undertook to try to remove those tan lines this weekend. I had ordered Menzerna IP/FP.



I did half of the trunk initially with FP by hand.. no difference. I then did FP by rotary.. better, but still there. I finally did IP/FP much better, much decreased hazing... but did not touch the "holographic swirls" that appear only under certain angles of light (halogen or sunlight).



I ended up doing the whole car with FP/IP. I went back to teh trunk, thinking of AIO/SG. I did half with that and half with GEPC/PS. I liked the latter much better. So I went with taht.



The car on the whole looks a lot better than last week. Menzerna did the trick in removing the DACP hazing that was painful to look at. However, it didn't take out all the hazing completely, nor did it touch the holographic swirls.



I ams tarting to believe that the swirls (having always seen them since the day I got the car from eht edealer) might be adeeper defect that I cannot correct, or that it may need rotary action.



However, I'm too tired and my car is too tired for anymore of that.

Glad you got thing looking better, but sorry you didn't get those holograms out. Yeah, they sound like something that's gonna take extraordinary measures. At least the car won't bug you every time you look at it.
 
I thought about your situation and think maybe I found the source of the problem.



You used a yellow cut pad to my knowledge. Audis have really hard paint as we know. What I was thinking was that this might have been a case where the diminishing abrasives worked against you. What I mean is the initial "cut" of the DACP might have been enough to get the swirls out, then as it broke down it ran out of steam for lack of better terms and your hard paint was really not budging much with it once it broke down and the yellow pad then began to do some damage.



I did this on my honda, dacp with yellow pad, and I noticed some very minor hazing. Nothing like what you had though, its almost like the initial cut of the DACP did its function and got the big stuff out but as the cut of the DACP broke down further and further it lost its ability to polish itself out finer on your hard paint thus causing the bad hazing. The hazing I got on my honda was so minor I really havent, and dont plan, to polish further to remove it. I went over the hood with DACP and a white pad on my honda and the hazing was then gone. There is some very minor hazing in the door but I dont even want to attack that area for two reasons: 1) I can barely notice it, so I doubt "normal" people can, my girl cant see it and thinks I am nuts. 2) Its so light I cant even get an angle on it where I could be effective at removing it. I am doing a coat of VM and topping with EX-P and expect it to look near perfect. My point is that my softer honda paint is more apt to the benefits of diminishing abrasives, where as your german paint thats harder might have actually had the reverse action. Its hard to describe, do you know what I am trying to say though?



Anyway it was just a thought, and interestingly enough you seemed to have better luck with a german polish that was designed for german cars paint. Anyway congrats :xyxthumbs
 
accumulator.. yes it looks flawless at some times of the day.. but then at sometimes the holograms start to bug me.. but I think that I'm happy with the finish now, as opposed to be horrified with it. Let's hope that it stay sthis way after the first wash.





breakneckvtec... yeah, i understand what you mean. I'm not sure what's wrong with the holograms, but we'll see what happens in 6 months when i redetail as I always do.

Neoprufrok- Something that occurs to me- while I'm always pushing 1Z products on you :rolleyes: :o (here he goes again), one of their polishes with fillers/waxes is said to be VERY good at hiding holograms. Can't remember which one, though.



And I think breakneckvtec has the right idea, but I sure don't blame you for wanting to get on with your life. There's a lesson here about accepting delivery of imperfect Audis...
 
Yeah there is a lesson. Normally I'm pretty obsessive/compulsive about delivery. Serious mistake this time not being present at actual delivery and not judging the paint in bright sunlight prior to my frist detail.

That would be the waxpolish soft. I haven't put in a lot of time with it yet though.
 
Is it possible that the swirls are in fact heat stress in the paint itself? This is a porblem in Australia's hot climate. You cannot remove this type of swirl, short of removing the paint.

Hmm... michael H any pics of heat stress?



I live in a fiarly mild climate most of the year, but in teh summer around here it can get up to 102-106 for a week.



I'm just really doubting that its something that I'm doing wrong or that I can even correct.
 
No I do not have any pcitures, but it looks exactly like what you describe. As the paint is damaged, no amount of polish will help. I have it on my black car, but it is only obvious in very bright light. Post a picture of your car and I will look at it.
