Ultima PGP

I see that Todd listed all Ultima products 20% off today and was looking through them. I just got a new bottle of Poly Seal and don't want to buy basically the same thing again. How does the Ultima Paint Guard Plus compare to Optimum poly Seal?

poli seal is an AIO polish, you are probably thinking of opti-seal which is a sealant like upgp.

on a side note I see the sale prices, but they go back up to normal price when i put them in my cart....strange.

Ultima paint Guard Plus is a clear sealant that's applied to a freshly clean and polished surface.

Optimum Poli-Seal is a new and revolutionary “one step” product which will enable detailers to clean, polish, perform light correction, and seal the paint ALL IN ONE STEP!

Whoops yes I meant Opti-Seal not Poly Seal. I actually just got both of them. Still tying to decide if I like the Poly Seal. Not working out so good as others have posted. Still need to play around with it. Actually the sale was yesterday but

I've used Optimums Poly-Seal a couple of times and while it works I thought the gloss and protection would last longer than 3 weeks.

Optimum Opti-Seal is very similar to Ultima paint Guard Plus however is a little easier to apply. Both are quality sealants and work well...

Thanks Bobby:)

I don't seem to have a problem with the Opti Seal and if they are very close then there is no need for a duplicate of what I already have.

Yes I was expecting a little bit more from what I had read on the Poly seal. Didn't really seem to do much other than clog up the pad.

I seem to prefer UPGP over Opti Seal. I have found that 3 coats of UPGP looks amazing and has incredible durability. I have not tried multiple coats of Opti Seal but for the 20% off you really can't beat it.

I can honestly say that I have not been disappointed in any Ultima product that I have tried. I was one of the original beta testers when the Ultima products were in development and have been using them for years.

I couldn't agree more Pat!

If Ultima offered paint correction products they'd be a one-stop-shop for every aspect of detailing......:bigups

I've had UPG on my Honda now for about a week and every time I walk up to the car, I marvel at the finish - it looks so smooth and candy like, you can see it's a clear coating with depth. It's different, I like it!...Now let's see how long it lasts, I put on 3 coats. I bought the Ultima car wash to make sure the UPG stays on well...

Hey guys - question about over application. If i I put on too much and I have some smearing and streaking, I assume a QD will take it off. I have some Meg's QD...but when I use that if Ive waited a day, do I still have a good film of the ultima when I wipe off the smear?

advice?

Yes that works, I leave it as long a possible then wipe any smearing with a QD. Dont do it right away as it needs time to bond, if you see streaking after about 30 seconds then you know you are applying to much product, you really only need about 1-2 squirts for an average sized hood, even less after you get you pad primed with product.

Hi Bobby! I have to agree with you on the durability of Poli-Seal but if you top it with Optimum Car Wax, you can see 3 or more months out of this combo. It doesn't take much to apply OCW and I know you are knowledgeable of this product. So give It a try. I have been having great luck with this combo and it is just amazingly easy to use both products.

Merry Christmas buddy!

thx - I am religious about not using too much but I'm doing about 250 sq ft of a boat /black hull and it smears every now and then...I'll use the QD the next day:

I like to think of it like removing a more traditional wax or sealant (something that requires hazing and buff-off). The paint accepts what it can, so when you buff of the residue you aren't affecting the actual bonded layer, just removing extra.

When you see streaks with a wipe on/walk away product you are looking at the extra product. What you don't want to do is to attempt to remove the streaks prior to the sealant bonding to the paint by introducing another chemical to the process. Usually a light wipe of a clean microfiber will knock the streak down and keep everything happy. If you still have streak give the sealant time to cure, perhaps a couple of hours or more, than wipe with a QD or water.

I just applied 3 coats of UPGP and the next day had a few streaks, a simple wipe down with a clean MF cloth did the trick.

I wholeheartedly agree Pat! :yourrock

Here's some tips for those using UPGP for the first time.

Hi guys, I saw someone posting about UPGP and thought this might be helpful to them as they had some questions. It's copied from my article on Live2Detail.

A lot of you have probably read this in different threads a number of times as a response from me to others questions. I get a pm with questions on these tips occasionally so I thought I would post this in it's own thread so I can send a link to anyone that asks in the future.

My UPGP tips:

I love all the Ultima products I've used.

Ultima Paint prep plus works as a light polish but also leaves behind a primer for the UPGP. You do not have to use the UPPP. If you don't then you should clean the paint after polishing so the UPGP bonds properly.

Ultima Paint Guard Plus

UPGP is extremely easy to apply. The mistake people make is they apply too much. Apply the UPGP by hand and follow the directions! Below is my method which should not contradict the instructions you receive with the product.

1.-Shake the bottle.

2.-Take a clean microfiber applicator and spray 1 spray onto it to prime it.

3.-Spray it once more and do about a 3 SQ FT area.

4.-Apply in circular motions just making sure to overlap and cover the entire area. You are not polishing so no need to rub too hard or over and over. I always finish with straight lines from front to back of the panel. 3 SQ FT is an estimate. Another thing to look for is that your applicator is no longer leaving anything on the paint. But on certain colors and without really good lighting its sometimes hard to tell anyway. I basically make sure I do about 3 SQ FT. Then I'll wipe over to the side a bit where I know I haven't applied any to see if there is still anything coming off the pad. Fred gave me a tip that is a great idea. When you are no longer sure if anything is on the pad touch your clean window with it and you'll be able to see if there is still product on the applicator.

5.-If I don't see anything then its time for (1) more spritz to the applicator.

6.-Repeat until you get to the last panel. Now just walk away. Their may or may not be a slight film on the paint for a bit but it starts it's bonding process immediately. Now just DO NOT touch :) Wait 45 minutes and inspect. There should be no need to do anything else. This is not a product that you have to buff off. In the unlikely chance that their is a streak somewhere after 45 minutes of curing allow to cure longer (up to 12 hours) after that if a streak remains simply take some Ultima QD and spray and wipe the streak with a high quality MF towel.

Notes:

Even though on some colors or in some lighting it seems like you aren't putting anything on your paint just TRUST the product. It will come out great if you don't over apply. I didn't have any trouble at all even the first time but I have read some people apply too much. It is a little disconcerting not always being able to tell if you are putting anything on your paint.
You can place the second coat after 45 minutes. I have always waited 12 hours between coats but apparently the product has been modified and the cure is accelerated. I HIGHLY recommend applying 2 layers or more for noticeable better appearance and gloss. On my personal vehicle I place 3 layers of UPGP. One coat every 12 hours.

Update: it has been verified by Rick of Ultima that you can layer after 45 minutes instead of 12 hours in most environments.
