uber pad just exploded on me... literally

Just as the title states.... was using an Uber pad with HD UNO and gg6" polisher on speed 4.5 . It started smoking, as soon as I pulled it up it exploded everywhere. I have pictures to show how much product I was using..I don't know what happened, but I'm pretty pissed now.

Thing is I just got this pad last week. Its done one side of a truck bed and the drivers side of the hood on this truck...that's it.

Its brand new.

I called him. Was told speed 5 is too high for compounding and 4.5 is too basically. I wasn't using any pressure so I don't know what the deal is. I did notice the second one getting extremely hot in the center before the Velcro peeled off. Polishing pads worked greatwith HF speed and finishing pad worked great with step B of Nitro though.

The second pad started to separate from the Velcro back pad at what I thought was 4.5. Looked afterwards and I was slightl under speed 4.

I was pissed earlier, but now its just lesson learned. My Megs maroon pad worked great. That's the compounding pad I'll be using now...

Are you changing or swapping pads often enough? I used 4 orange 5.5" B&S pads (same as Uber) on speed 6 with a GG RO and as they got warm would switch to an alternate, then back to the original when that got warm. No problems, no explosions. Sounds like a heat problem.

That sucks! Good thing it didn't damage the paint. From the looks of things, you got these pads pretty darn hot. How long of a work time in each session? If you don't mind me asking, are you not wiping off the polish residue immediatley after each section? And how and how often are you cleaning your pad?

The first pad was just the hood. I was cleaned the second pad after the fender and door, after the pass. Side of bed and skipped the tailgate. I think I was just working the product too long and heating them up. They're sending out replacement pads though.

I basically did things the same as I have been with my rotary and maroon megs pad. Just something I'll have to learn from and keep an eye on.

I'd be willing to bet that's the cause of this failure. You need to clean your pad after each pass. You'll not only get a longer lifespan from your pads, but you'll get more cut and the finish will be sharper. Better to keep your buffing cycles shorter...maybe like 2-3 up/down and 2-3 side to side for each pass.

Rotary pads don't get ANYWHERE close as hot as DA pads due to the constant back and forth movement a DA creates. The heat is usually produced right in the middle of the pad and can only take so much before what happened happens.

I have never heard of that with foam pads. Very interesting. Must have been a bad batch.

Earlier this week to say that we abused some HD yellow cutting pads is an understatement. Black paint in the sun, temperatures reaching 146 degrees for hours. No issues. PCXP speed 6.

Seems like the only time I've ever destroyed a pad was when using my Griot's DA on full tilt for long periods. I have yet to do it on my PC XP. The extra power that GG machine has is a waste mostly IMHO because there really isn't a dedicated need for it. 99% of the time I'm using it at speed 4 or 5.

I would like to say that whatever the problem was User or product Phil is handling it very professionally and is very easy to deal with.
