Tylenon PM. Anybody taken it?

DEEP & WET
I've been suffering from insomnia for the past month or so. My medical board exams are tomorrow and Wednesday and I really need to get some quality sleep. I've been averaging about 4 hours a night for the past 2 weeks I guess, so I bought some of this stuff today.

My fear is this. I take it and tomorrow I feel tired and kinda' "blurry" in the head if you know what I mean. As a medical student, I know what the active ingredients are and what they do, but I need some real world advice from those who have taken this drug. Any help would be appreciated.

I took it several times last Summer when the ankle pain (fracture) was keeping me awake. It helped some for the pain, but didn't always help with the sleep. On the occasion when it did help the sleep, I felt a bit "drugged" the next day - of course I was drugged :)

I may not be a good example though since I don't take a lot of pain or sleep medication, and may be more sensitive to the effects than others. :nixweiss

JJ i take it when i need to get to sleep but usually only half a dose so i dont feel weird half the next day

But if you do wake up during the night and get up for some reason you will feel kinda dizzy

If you find yourself still groggy that means you took it too late, try taking it earlier to avoid the problem. You need more sleep than you think anyway so just do it, if you havent slept well lately all the better.

I was up till 2 am last night and had to get up at 5, made my whole day hell. Not a safe thing in my biz to be tired

I take it every now and again. It does OK for me, and yes it may make you feel a little groggy the next day if you take it to late. I forget the name of it but there is another over the counter sleep aid that does not contain meds for pain. Why take extra meds if there not needed. Just a suggestion. OTC sleep aids only help you fall asleep. They may not keep you asleep.

The help falling asleep is what I need I believe. I'm usually OK once I get there. Like I said, it's been a rough couple of weeks running on 4 hours of sleep everynight. I will probably take 1 pill at 9 o'clock and take a hot shower to push me over the edge. Hopefully it will knock me out until about 5 a.m.

Unfortunately, I'm in a situation where I can take the pills and be groggy the next day, or I don't take the pills and I'm tired and groggy the next day. Can't win really, so I choose to take the pills and risk being groggy the next day.

Thanks for the response guys,

JJ

I've had good luck with Melatonin. Its a natural nutrient. I heard it works for some people and not others, but it did the trick for me. Walmart sells the Natrol brand I believe for about $4-6, (3mg. 120tabs) I take 1/2 tablet and 30 mins later....zzzzz.

Try to take it so that you get 8 hours of sleep or so. That'll help you to metabolize the stuff in it a lil better, in my experience. If you keep having problems with sleeping well, you should consult a doctor (or just write yourself a prescription, after tomorrow :).

My doc put me on xanax for insomnia/stress/etc. You should try it JJ, it did me wonders. I ended up taking it for about 3 months or so, while i waited out a rough time in my life, but now I have stuff together and I sleep like a baby.

Theres other ways to help sleeping, but I assume as a medical guy, you have to take a drug test ;).

P.S. good luck on the exams.

The sleep med in Tylenol PM is diphenhyramine, 37.5 mg per tab, if I remember correctly...it may be 25mg....but generic Benadryl is generic Benadryl. It is cheaper to simply buy generic diphenhydramine in 25 mg tabs. 25mg should be the initial dose. If not adequate, try 50mg the next night. The problem with diphenydramine is that it has a long half life...up to 12 hours and it is that which causes the "drug hangover" in the morning. Taking the smallest dose with at least 8-10 hours before waking can minimize this effect. It sound to me like you have some very typical stress/anxiety stuff going on related to sitting your boards in the near future.....I remember the feeling well. If you are having trouble just getting to sleep because of all those factoids whirling aound in your head, I would recommend getting a small script of Ambien from your doctor or maybe one of the residents you work with can write you one. Ambien has a half life of 1-1 1/2 hours, so it will not produce the "drug hangover" effect. 10 mg of Ambien should put you to sleep in something like 15-20 minutes...good luck on your boards

Take Melatonin! You can find it at any health food store or vitamin store. I prefer GNC's brand that is cherry flavored and you let it disolve under your tongue. I can not take Tylenol or most medicine like that without passing out. Took their night time once and slept through my alarm and through work. Woke up 2 hours after work started and had to call in. My boss said they were worried about me and he came over and was knocking on the doors so I slept through that too. LOL

Well, one day down, one to go. I took 1 Tylenol PM last night around 7:45. I then took a shower and laid in bed reading review books... that did the trick for sure. I was out by 9pm and woke-up this morning at 5:30. It was perfectly beautiful. I think I rocked the board exam to day, so let us hope for the same tomorrow.

I thank-you for all of you recommendations and opinions. I have also tried melatonin and it didn't seem to do anything for me. I think most of my problem revolves around stress and caffeine consumption. I will most likely take another one tonight and hope it performs as well as it did lastnight. I was quite alert and chipper this morning... especially after the Stacker 2 I consumed on the was to school...LOL. Oh yeah and future reference, don't mix upper and downers!!!
