Toy test: cleaning ability of TurtleWax ICE Liquid Polish, Meguiars NXT Tech Wax liqu

Caution: it might have happened that some products have ingredients that dissolve marker pen, and such simple test might not be an indicator of cleaning ability of wax. The test surface was different from modern car finish.

Below is my toy test result on black non-clear-coat paint on a luggage cart.

I drew several line segments with Power Mark Plus Permanent Marker green, and waited several hours so that the maker pen polymers set and cure.

With the same amount of wiping with napkin,

Meguiars NXT wax liquid,

Meguiars Cleaner Wax,

TurtleWax Platinum Ultra Gloss paste wax

almost removed the mark on the paint surface, while

Meguiars Gold Class Bug & Tar Remover,

TurtleWax ICE Liquid Polish,

Meguiars NXT Tech Protectant,

TurtleWax F21 Super Protectant

transferred green color to napkin, but did not remove the mark on the paint surface.

Among those two vinyl protectants tested, NXT Tech Protectant did better at reducing the mark: after repeated wiping, TurtleWax F21 Super Protectant almost stopped transferring green color to napkin. I wiped that line segment with Meguiars NXT Tech Protectant, and saw that it transferred green color to the napkin. Then I wiped that same line segment with TurtleWax F21 Super Protectant and saw almost no color transfer. Then I wiped it with NXT Tech Protectant and saw color transfer.

I did cleaning ability test on rear quater panels of my car.

The car is 1992 Mercedes 300D, white, 265000 miles.

Nov. 2005: Meguiars Quick Clay, Meguiars #9, Turtle Wax Platinum Ultra Gloss liquid.

Dec. 2005: TurtleWax Platinum Ultra Gloss paste.

March 5, 2005.

The rear quater panels had brown dots and black dots which were not removed by washing.

Applicator: folded microfiber towel.

With TurtleWax Platinum Ultra Gloss paste, Meguiars Deep Crystal Polish (DC#2), or Meguiars NXT Tech Wax liquid, I could remove those dots.

With TurtleWax ICE Liquid Polish (with similar amount of wiping), however, I could not remove those dots. ICE's cleaning ability seemed very weak - at least for those particular road grime -.

The Ice polish may have some cleaning ability, but it's primary use if probably more for protection. It doesn't surprise me that it wasn't super aggressive in cleaning the paint.

People say that Meguiars NXT wax , TurtleWax Platinum Ultra Gloss wax, Meguiars Deep Crystal Polish (DC#2) have very mild cleaning ability.

ICE liquid polish has even weaker cleaning ability than these.

This is very disappointing, because ICE Liquid Polish is supposed to be time saver: no trim staining at all, no need to find shade. If we need pre-cleaning so often due to ICE's weak cleaning ability, it is not so time saving.

There is possibility that I have a defective product. So I contacted TurtleWax today. Someone at TurtleWax will call me next week.

I did the marker pen toy test with some other products.

Meguiars ScratchX and TurtleWax Scratch & Swirl Remover have "super" cleaning ability. They removed the marker pen mark very quickly and easily.

Meguiars Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner DC#1 (This was purchased in 2004. They reformulated this product later.), however, did not have "super" cleaning ability.

Added by editing:

TurtleWax called me today. They said that ICE Liquid Polish has weaker cleaning ability than Platinum wax.

"Generally all automotive wax and polish products, clean, shine and protect automotive paint in one step."

"All polish and wax products clean, shine and protect, unless otherwise stated on the label."

Umm, the ICE products as far as I know aren't supposed to be cleaners.

Refer to the following link for info on both ICE products: http://www.turtlewax.com/ice/product info.html

It isn't mentioned anywhere there as a cleaner. I could easily be wrong and there might be something not listed there.

On the web page you gave us, it reads as follows.

Q: Does Ice Polish clean during application?

A: Ice polish will chemically clean and remove many organic materials like tar, oil, grease, some bug splatters, and remove old wax buildup. Always wash and dry the exterior of the vehicle before applying Ice to remove as much surface soil as possible.
