2000 Lincoln Town Car limo. Owner had it repainted (expensive paint, moderately priced paint job through a friend) and it had some weird orange peel issues, not huge sections but trails of it over the hood. Lines of it along the edges of the hood, then randomly through the rest of the hood, kind of like it was drizzled on the car like you'd decorate a cake.

Wet sanded with Meguiars Uni-Grit 2000:

First polishing pass was with my PC 7424 XP using 3D HD Cut and a 5" Meguiars microfiber cutting disc:

Second polishing pass with my PC, Meguiars #105 and a 5" Meguiars MF cutting disc:

Doing a couple other sections, #105 seemed to have a touch more cut and I had a problem with wiping off HD Cut. Maybe I was using too much? Anyway, it was clear that even the 5" MF cutting disc didn't have enough oomph, switched to a 6" Lake Country white foamed wool pad and my PC, using #105. Seemed to cut faster, but the paint was really hard. Ended up switching to my Dewalt 849 rotary, Optimum foam orange cutting pad and Meguiars #105.

Drivers side had rotary swirls:

Rotary, orange, #105. Paint was so hard it left minimal marring and no holograms.

2000_Lincoln_Town_Car_Limo_compounded1.jpg

Not a whole lot of process pics, cold front was on the way, about 70 when I started, wanted to get done before the temps started to plummet.

Final process:

ONR wash, Optimum nano-skin to clay (test product)

Meguiars #105 using an Optimum orange foam cutting pad and my Dewalt 849 rotary on speeds 1000-1400-1000 rpms

3D HC Polishing using an Optimum orange foam cutting pad and my PC 7424 XP on speeds 5-6

Optimum G-P-S and an Optimum microfiber polishing pad and PC on speed 5

The car isn't perfect, and frankly, the paint job isn't good enough to go balls to the wall on it. The owner was really pleased with how it turned out given he'd paid $600 for the paint and his friend charged him $300 to paint it. No longer looks like a cheap paint job. He also was so impressed how Opti-Coat looks on my car that he said he'd probably have me back out in the spring to polish the car and have me Opti-Coat it.

2009 BMW 335. Probably the least swirled I've ever seen a 3 year old jet black BMW. Paint seemed harder than normal, probably why it wasn't like I'm used to seeing. Owner's budget was enough for 2 polishing steps. He's considering a full on correction in the spring. But for now, the swirls have been knocked way down and the paint looks significantly deeper.

2009 Mercedes GL550. I had put Opti-Coat on a friend's X5, who recommended to the owner of this GL that I do the same. He even said if he wasn't happy, he'd pay for it! That's the kind of recommendation I like! The owner wasn't looking for a full on, two day paint correction, he felt the paint looked pretty good as is. But looking it over, it was apparent that it would need some additional polishing beyond the one step I normally use to clean the paint up. We decided that two steps would make a dramatic improvement without going overboard. And to be honest, he was more interested in the protective quality of Opti-Coat than having a show car detail.

I received an e-mail from this customer today, really nice to have someone take the time to let us know our work is appreciated.

The Mercedes looks great. It was nice seeing it in the parking lot. The difference was readily apparent even compared to newer cars. Thanks to you and Chris for getting it looking so good.

2012 BMW 535. Excellent condition overall, primary goal was winter protection. Paint was pretty much swirl free so one step was more than adequate.

2013 Ford F-150, brand new, owner wanted it protected. Either the dealer didn't prep it or they actually knew what they were doing. No swirls other than one small section on the hood that I could find.

Amazing work Scott. Questions/comments: first off, prep on the 535 for the winter? In Texas? We just started getting freezing rain and snow tonight here in MI, no steady work for me for a while I guess. On the Mercedes, did you IPA/Eraser/glass cleaner to prep for the OC? What our your thoughts on the OPT nanoskin? Any idea of a release date? Is it a towel? A block? Something? On the limo, you mentioned a white foamed wool pad; I'm only aware of the purple foamed wool, is this one different?( the pfw has saved me on a few jobs, I dig it). 3D trim protectant, good stuff?

On the 535, w/w@ 20to1, is this the dilution rate you normally use to clean leather and vinyl? The carpet looks great! Do you usually use the 3D shampoo at the dilution rate or do you mix based on the level of soil? How do you like it? That's it, thanks buddy, they look awesome.

We do get snow and ice here. Typically a few times a year, plus once we get a cold front here, people panic and want wax on their cars...when they should be worried about it all year!

HD Polish is very similar to OHP in that it isn't an oily polish. Just added a little OCP to the ONR bucket. Was using a new pad with Opti-Coat, it was squeaking and grabbing pretty good until it was fully primed.

The nano-skin is a 6 x 6 rubber mat, does a nice job. I believe that for right now, Optimum is going with the pad version. Haven't heard anything about a release date on this product. Sometimes I'll get something, give feedback and maybe go through a few others before Optimum decides to release something. Others test them too, so depending on the feedback from everyone, products get a go or no go, or maybe another revision.

I believe I got those pads from my local Optimum rep (he used to sell pads, basically gave me his stock), going by the product description he gave me.

3D Trim protectant is excellent. Good durability, not overly shiny. And a bottle lasts a long time.

20:1 is the dilution rate I use for Woolite/water. Has really good cleaning power, concentration is light enough there isn't much left behind in terms of residue. Quick wipe with an ONR dampened towel removes what little is left behind.

16:1 for 3D Carpet Shampoo is what is recommended, haven't seen any reason to mix it stronger. If I run into something really nasty, I always have OPC pre-mixed at 3:1.

Great Job Scott as always.. Very enjoying to read all of your thread.

Only got 2 question, is it easy to apply Opti Coat 2.0? How do you use it(your methods)?

Since I try using Cquartz but it always leave haze in the end and need to wait for 10-20 minutes to buff it off.

Thanks. Appreciate your knowledge.

Looks good guys! Lots of restate on limos! I remember those days! GL looks killer! Ceramaclear? Snow falling this morning! Going to suck on this first job! Hurry up and go the store and stock up on lottery tickets, cigarettes, and beer! We may be buried in...lol!

Opti-Coat is nearly as easy to use as Opti-Seal. I use the enclosed foam pad (others like microfiber pads) and wipe on a section at a time in warm weather, two in cooler weather. I've got it down now that there are very few areas that look a little milky after a couple minutes, make sure I gently wipe those down with a very soft MF towel before moving on. It takes a couple times to really get the technique down but once you do its pretty easy.

70 yesterday, snow this morning, typical north Texas weather roller coaster. It was miserable this morning, pushed back the Pilot detail we had until 10 am. And even then it was only 35 with 15-20 mph north winds...at a house where the driveway faces north. :wall

Ah, it's "Blue Norther" season! Wouldn't be much fun to work in a north-facing driveway. Though, I imagine it is even tougher to ride in that weather than detail...

It was pretty horrible, haven't been on my bike yet this week. By the time I've been finishing up, its late afternoon and temperatures have been plummeting once the sun goes down. Other than the concrete path I ride on at the park, its all forest so there isn't anything to hold the heat in. It will go from low 50s to low 40s quick.
