Too many hours on a Kia Sportage.....yes a Kia

I have come to this forum because I wanted to learn all I could about detailing and the best products there are. As a part of this process, I have gone through various topics and found a few very interesting interchanges among forum members.

What is interesting is that when a man like Ron Ketcham, who is quite accomplished in the automotive paint business, tries to shed some light on plain old ignorance and old wives tales, some forum members attacked him. Kind of the way people attack things they are afraid of. He got accused of pushing dealer sealant packages (kind the car dealers rip you for $600 to apply to your paint when you could do it for $20 or whatever) just because his company manufactures some of those products that the dealers - and professional detailers - carry.

He tried to explain some things that are very important to everyone here about paint and why certain products are bad for it. He gets kind of technical and alienates some people, but he knows the science of these products and cuts through the marketing hype to try to educate people. I really appreciate this and obviously some other forum members do also. For those that don't, think about your criticism. This guy knows car paint, it's his business to supply GM, Ford, etc., with paint care products. He doesn't just detail cars!!!!

I think Ron Ketcham should have a little science section on this forum to educate those of us who really want to understand the hard science of all these car prep-polish-wax-whatever products. He can explain WHY some silicones are bad for paint, clear up whether or not Dawn should be used for removing wax for prep, etc. And his reasons are based on science, not how much something costs or who puts their almighty label on it. He is interesting and if he could tailor his explanation to the layman, he would have a fan club.

The bottom line is that his company manufactures products that are used by the major car companies. He knows his stuff and I am very glad I looked far enough into this forum to find him. I have seen his name here and there on other forums and think he is one of the best resources to someone who is thirsty for this knowledge because he backs it up with science....not hype.

Ha, if you guys only knew how many private messages and e-mails I sent to him. The guy knows his stuff, he doesn't really work within the same product line as us and I think that is what put the distance between us. Alot of the guys here are open and eager to hear what he has to say. If they're not ......... I guess they don't want to learn or accept anything else outside of their little "realm" of products. Kinda stupid if you ask me. Screw them though, just makes them dumber and me smarter.

I'm closing this topic (and moving it to off topic) because there's no way it can be constructive. We have a set of rules. We apply the rules uniformly. If we don't we have chaos.

After I made my first post, and my coffee put some sense into me, I decided to move it here and PM el Lizzard.

I am so tired of people bowing down to worship Ron K. If Autopia had currency then I would expect to see his face on the dollar bill. If we had a religion I would expect people to be bowing to him. I'm tired of people quoting him like he wrote the bible or something. Lizard wasn't even a member of the forums when the drama with Ron went down. Oh well. At least we don't get too many of these kinds of posts written.

I wouldn't put it past him, but I would figure it would more likely be someone he knows or something.... how could someone new to the forum assess that conclusion so strongly.

That would take a lot of balls to join a forum and then post publicly on issues that one knows nothing about. :nixweiss

oh well, the mayor handled it swiftly and painlessly.

I've been digging through the forums and I can't find any posts by Ron K. Did they get deleted? I'm trying to compare IP addresses but I can't find any of his posts. If I am looking hard and can't find anything, then how the hell can a newbie find his posts? hmmmmmmm......

This Lizard guy is 12.246.53.211 so if you can find some of Ron's old posts then maybe we can compare them. If Ron uses more than one computer then he could have more than one IP address. I use several computers to post from so my IPs will be different too. I used a different computer to write the other post I have in this thread.

My thoughts exactly. I think Mr. Lizard has shown his cards we'll have to keep a close eye on this "newbie?".

Probably the first and only Kia Sportage to "grace" (thats being VERY generous) the forums lol. I've known the owner for years and he's brought me a ton of cars, on top of that I owed him a pretty big favor. This is what he chose to use it on. I think some of the appeal of doing this was it was a challenge. As you will see it was in a very poor state. Also smoked badly and had a very bad oil leak every time it was started. I think he got this car for practically nothing and was going to fix it up to flip it. I do like challenges, but I think I reached my limit with this one, and never want to see another car like this again lol. But I knew it would make for a good transformation.

I'm going to apologize now for what you're about to view. Its ok to leave now, before you're scarred from looking... lol

After cleaning the wheels I started taking pics..

Thanks for looking at this complete piece of automotive inadequacy. My apologies to your eyes. ;)

Jeff !!!!!!

Amazing, simply amazing transformation !!!!!!!!

You have heard of the expression - "when pigs fly", right ?

This thing easily wins, hands-down, the "When Pigs Drive" Award !!!!! :)

Holy Cow !!!!

I need to go outside and finish my Grand Cherokee now and try to not remember what I have just seen - hope you had all your shots before you started touching this carrier of all bad things that could ruin your health mobile... :)

Incredible turn around - it looks better than any KIA - even a new one !

We are so proud of you !!!!!!!

Great, great, super job here !

You must have owed your friend one hell of a favor!

Amazing turn around on that interior, I need to look into more of your work. Great job.

that had to be the grungiest interior i've ever seen on this forum... what a turn around. you must of owed this guy big... great work.. you just showed us nothing is impossible

I may be new here but I have looked through just about every Shine and Show thread here in the last month or so. So call me crazy but it was kinda nice seeing an everyday driver being totally transformed. There are quite a few but for the most part they are exotics to some of us. I love seeing all the exotics and such, but there is something to be said about someone going to that much effort for a vehicle like that. Who knows, that Kia might just be some twisted persons dream car. (That would be a sad life). But anyways great work.
