TOL Hi-Temp Levelers, Extra, Heavy, Light for PC? [WRN! ]56k

Hey guys, I've been lurking around the forum for a while, and noticed that a lot of autopians uses the Hi-Temp brand from Topoftheline.com. Irene from TOL recommended it to me when I ordered it before, and that was after I ordered the Menzerna FPII and Menzerna IP. I'm also currently using the 3M Perfect-It II Rubbing Compound (don't think it's light cut though) #39002. I had some problems with Swirls, probably not working it in long enough, not applying enough pressure (event though I did use speed 5-6 on the PC). I was wondering how the Hi-Temp would work on the Porter Cable, and if it's as easy to use. How would you use it, how much do you have to work it in, and what kind of swirls would i use for each of the product (pictures would be EXTREMELY helpful of kinds of swirls it can work out with the PC... not the rotary). Here's some pictures of my work that I've done.

97 M3 Techno Violet.

1. Used LC Orange --> Menzerna IP (Didn't remove deeper swirls) so i went to...

2. Used LC Orange --> 3m Perfect-It II Rubbing Compound 39002. Not noticable difference.

3. Gave up --> LSP --> Menzerna FPII on LC White Polishing Pad.

Here are some before pics.

Suggestions?? Mods please move to different thread if it's in correct, but I just want to know if Hi-Temp Heavy cut will be able to remove those swirls with a PC, or if not do i have to buy a the Extra Heavy Cut.

I can't really answer your Q about the H-T products as I've only used their Light Cut. There are people here who really know that product line and oughta be able to point you in the right direction but if I *had* to guess I'd say to just get their Heavy Cut and use it with 4" pads if necessary. If Irene says one product or the other is right for your application, I'd take her word for it ;) She knows from BMWs.

The 39002 *is* 3M's "Fine Cut RC" but it doesn't do all that much on hard paint by PC, at least not unless you use 4" pads. The smaller pads really do make a world of difference.

I hear the paint on those e36 Bimmers is pretty hard, but I haven't gotten to the paint correction stage on mine yet so I can't speak from first-hand experience.

I would say menzerna IP is comparable to Hi-Temp medium cut. I can see that theres still quite abit of swirls on your car. I say just go up to Extreme Cut with orange pad. With the pc it may take along time to break down compared to the rotary but it does remove heavy swirling pretty easily. Also just to let you know I find that Lake Country Orange pads are really mild so if it's not cutting it with the orange I would recommend moving up to the yellow.

bmw paint is just hard to work for me....I tried the following to no avail on a 323...

orange pad and IP, PG, PG/RMG mis, FpII, 83

burgandy pad with IP, PG/RMG, 83...

nothing really touched the swirls in the paint excpt for the burgandy pad and PG....but I was not about to spend all day on it so I just gave it a coat of FPII with a polishing pad and sealed it, then canauba PS the next day and called it good enough....maybe rotary is necessary????

Yeah, BMW paints are just ... errrgh. I'll talk to Irene about it and hoepfully call her also. She'll probably be able to guide me through it. Thanks guys. I sorta did what you did and gave up after the first run through. I wasn't going to spend another 4 -5 hours polshing out the swirls without any progress. I think Rotary is necessary, but some people found PC to be sufficent... :nixweiss
