Today's Detail - Almost bit off more than I could chew....almost. 56k WARNING!

Okay guys, as some of you already know, this weekend was my test weekend for my new Cyclo. Unfortunately, things did not go so well with the Cyclo, so my review of the machine has been put on hold until I can get some better pads for it. If you'd like to see my partial review of the Cyclo, you can see it here: Cyclo Review

The vehicle I was testing the Cyclo out on is my "beater car" 97' Explorer that has some pretty major clearcoat failure on all of the horizontal surfaces. I didn't plan on really putting any emphasis on the detail itself, but after polishing my butt off this weekend (four hours saturday and three more hours today), it actually came out WAY better than I thought it ever would and thought I'd share it with everyone.

This is a perfect example of what a PC is capable of while at the same time showing it's limits. I started off by compounding the entire vehicle with a 7.5" LC VC yellow cutting pad and 3M PI II RC. I spent all four hours yesterday compounding all the defects out as best as I could. Today, I started off by polishing with 1Z PP and a green Sonus pad then moved to VM with a blue Sonus pad, and finally EX with a grey Sonus pad.

Like I said, this car has been plagued with clearcoat failure (lacquer checking) on all the horizontal surfaces and I knew going into this that it could not be corrected, even with a rotary but I still wanted to try to make it less noticeable and also wanted to try to bring back some depth and shine that it has been lost over the years. In addition to the cc failure, I also had a lot of scrapes, scratches, and scuffs to deal with all over the place.

Unfortunately, I didn't take any full size pics of the car before I started because I never planned on posting any of this, but I did get some close ups of some of the really bad defects that I was going to try to get out with the cyclo, and ended up getting them out with the PC instead.

I will try to place a caption for each picture to explain what you are looking at. The car ended up so shiny that it was messing with my autofocus camera really bad, so there are some weird things that popped up in some of the pics but I will point them out.

Here is a couple shots of the hood before the detail but after being washed and dried to show you how bad the cc failure is:

Now, here's the hood after being detailed as best as I could. As you can see, it's still there but it's been knocked down quite a bit. You can actually stand at certain angles and not even see it at all.

Scratched door before and after: The funny white spot in the after pic is something the camera picked up, not a defect.

Rear fender lip before and after. Again, another funny spot the camera picked up in the after pic:

Rear door before and after: Some more glare the camera picked up in the after pic:

Brought the color right back!

Any full shots?

edit: Looks freaking awesome! Never seen that color on a Ford look so good...Your hard work really paid off :)

Coming from you, Sean, that is a very big compliment. I'm used to seeing transformations like this from you, but never thought it could be accomplished with a PC......not to brag or anything.;) Seriously, though, you are right. The color really did come right back and I can't believe how good the color looks either. The before and after pictures were taken at almost the exact same time of day and lighting. The paint really did look that different before I started. You couldn't even tell it was a metallic, and almost all of the scratches are gone now too. The only thing I am disappointed in is the hood. It's really an eye sore, but I'm hoping to have a rotary under the christmas tree and I'll tackle it with that to see if I can knock it down some more.

Hello you did a great Job.... I was wondering what those little cracks where on my wifes car and You told me CC failure Not happy with that I'm wondering if we can get it fix because it only on the hood.. is there any thing you can use to help stop than UV protectant or something like that..

Yep, that would be cc failure and there's nothing you can do to repair it, other than a repaint. Other than that, all you can do is try to hide it as best you can like I did. I'm sure the more you keep it protected, the better it will look and the longer it will last before getting worse.

This was my future mother in law's car, which she bought brand new in 97' and I can almost guarantee that it never had a coat of wax on it from the day she bought it. It was even lucky if it got washed every now and then, so I'm sure this neglect led to this.

hey get off the grass... including the black expo:D

looks good.. cant wait to see review on the cyclo...

LOL. We're normally aren't a "park on the lawn" kind of family, but people don't respect the speed limit to often around here and since we've had one truck side swiped and the other has lost two mirrors, we now try to stay as far away from the street as possible.

As far as the Cyclo review, I'm waiting on some Sonus 4" pads before I try to use it again and then I will finish off the review. So far, I'm not really liking it but I haven't given a fair chance yet to prove itself to me. We will see.

Looks great! I've never seen that color shine like that on an X before! The CC failure is getting to be really common on older explorers. Even on my own, which hasn't had a spot of dust on it since I bought the car is getting worse and worse and theres nothing I can do to stop it :( Its just plain frustrating!

Anyways, awesome job Dookie! :bow

damn that's an awesome job! :bow you really cleaned the paint because i thought you're before and after pictures were taken at different times of the day.

but i love working hard on these beaters to get results like this. i had a similar experience with my dad's altima, hardly ever washed or waxed. but i gave it a good polishing and the first thing that came to my mind: gee, i didn't know this was a metallic paint. :D

great job jason! maybe if you have more pictures you can enter it into that extreme makeover contest. :xyxthumbs

Yeah, the pictures were both taken around 1pm Sat. and Sun..

I thought about entering it in the contest as well, but I didn't take any before pics other than what you see here and that pretty much kills it. No big deal. There will be others.

Thanks for all the compliments guys, I appreciate it. :wavey

Great job Jason! It really came out well. It is amazing what can be done with neglected paint.

I know the hood was rough...how did it come out? I'm curious because a friend of mine has a 99 Solara with some clear coat failure and he wants me to help him detail his car...I'm afraid to use anything too aggressive on it.

Keep up the good work!

Todd,

Thanks for the compliments. The hood came out okay at best. Don't get me wrong, it's WAY better than it was but it's still there. At least its smooth and shiny now. Don't be afraid to hit it hard, because it laughs at anything mild. Unless the cc is actually peeling off, it's my thinking that if you round off the edges before the get a chance to peel you might be able to prolong it a little bit. I'm hoping to have a rotary for xmas, and I'm going to tackle that hood one more time.

That really looks sharp, great transformation!

I have a 97 Explorer too, a white Limited. Has some minor clear failure on the hood also (seems like this is common for Explorers, almost like the hood isn't insulated properly or something) but its almost invisible on the white. That looks very sharp.

wow, that is a great trasnsformation. you upped the value of that behicle A LOT!! i like working on beaters like that too because it really shows your hard work. great job!
