To tape or not to Tape?

How and why do you tape off a car when doing a polishing job, is it because of the cracks or a guide in which to polish? Thanks for the help, any tips on how would be great as well

Taping prevents wax residue from getting into seams and textured trim, where it can be dificlt to remove. It can also save a lot of time...a few minutes of taping VS the time it takes to clean the wax off of where it shouldn't be.

I know you can tape off trim and other areas you would'nt want wax to get on. I have seen pictures in some posts where guys tape the area where two body panels come together. Now when you guys do that is there a problem not polishing that area under the tape or do you get to that after you are done?? Just curious because i think i am going to tape off the next car i get to do because it is time consuming at the end of a long detail to clean all that up when you are beat and just want to give the car back and go and relax and drink a brew.

Don covered the reasons for taping, but another solution is to use products that don't leave the residue.
Klasse AIO, 4 Star UPP, S100 Carnauba are three that I use that do not leave the black trim stained with the white stuff. In fact, I use the AIO on the black plastic trim on my van to keep it looking good.

As stated the product you are using will determine if you should tape. Many polishes and waxes will leave a white residue on plastic and rubber trim pieces. When I used my PC for the first time I taped off all the trim. It did take some time though, nearly 30 minutes. I’ve since started using Poorboy’s and Clearkote products. Neither one leave any residue on plastic or rubber trim (in addition to all the other fine qualities of both product lines).

I tape also with any heavy PC or rotary work as I have burned trim with both in the past, the tape is slippery and protects trim.

When using the PC, I usually spray down the trim with QD or woolite/water mix to keep it from staining.

The rotary is another animal. IMO, you really have to tape down the door jams, seals, cover the windshield wiper areas, etc.. to keep the splatter out.
