To tape or not to tape?

I m doing my first paint correction work with a PC on my Xterra. The worst part of it so far has been taping. Im using the XMT line and it seems pretty easy to work with. Do I need to spend time taping?

I will continue to do it if it is needed but if the polish can be cleaned off, I woud rather do that.

Thanks for the help!

I, personally, never tape anything off. A PC won't splatter polish unless you leave it running after you remove it from the surface, or are just really sloppy. Just take your time, and you should be fine.

Thanks for the reply! Im more concerned with hitting the untaped areas with the pad and leaving marks.

I only tape fairly porous black surfaces where if I make a mistake, I won't be trying for a long time to remove the polish/wax residue. I don't normally tape chromed plastic or badges.

I don't using the pc or Cyclo. I think the rotary guys are the slobs....heck a friend come over with his rotary and he even got polish on my wall.:D :D :D

I only do it if the product/trim-staining issue is severe. While I fancy myself pretty handy with the PC/Cyclo, there are some products that I absolutely do *NOT* want to get on some types of trim. Often I'll just use a piece of thin cardboard as a barrier instead of taping, at least it's some degree of insurance.

OK, what are the products that you "absolutely do *NOT* want to get on some types of trim", I couldn't possibly pass on this, LOL.

And what trims are *INCREDIBLY* difficult to clean if you get any products on them?

hehe, I couldn't resist!:laugh: :xyxthumbs

PC= tape optional

Rotary= tape

At least for me.......

I did tape my buddies black on black vert corvette trailing edges for a PC polish. I didn't want any IP with an orange pad to get into contact with the vert material...Just be very careful and take your time if your tapeless......:xyxthumbs

I don't tape many badges. The ones to worry about are those chrome ones on the Caravans. Just touch them and they turn a grey/black.

LOL. I have never had to tape with the PC. But just like you said, I make a big mess when the rotary comes out. It's definitely not intentional considering how much more work it creates for me.

So I am getting the impression that I probably don't need to tape. I haven't done the full car yet so I was unsure.

If I did hit the trim, what is the best way to get rid of stains from wax or poilishes.

because the rotary wobbles instead of rotates, sling is alot less likely unless you lift it while it's still spinning and with alot of product on the pad. It's not gonna hurt anything to tape, but what should dictate that is the product you're working with. For example, Vanilla Moose is a polish that doesn't stain trim so if that's what you were working with then you wouldn't need to tape. But if you were working with a product that does stain trim and didn't trust yourself and your ability to stay off it, then it might be a good idea to tape.

I will tape off badges and any 'gaps' between trim and body just to avoid any product getting deposited there. Trim itself, though, no.

Does XMT stain trim? If it does get on the trim, do I just wipe it off with H2O?

Sorry for all the questions? Rather be safe than sorry.

Depends on the product and pad. I could polish with P0106FF and a black pad @1500 in a museum... HTEC and a wool pad, not so much :).
