To Coat or not

Hi All,

Its been awhile since I have posted so first I hope everyone is well:reckon

I have never done a coating on my personal DD since I like using new waxes. But I am getting to a point where time is becoming a luxury and my car is getting neglected.

My car has extremely thin paint and looking for a durable coating. Leaning towards Gtechniq.

Is one coating thicker than another? Would one prevent rock chips over another?

hey dhaval, I still think opti coat 2.0 is hard to beat for durability and looks. give joe at the darkside a shout, he's turned into an opti coat master.

Hey, old Friend !
Have not seen you on here for awhile !
Glad to see your dd1101 again !

Well, as you know, there are a few coatings out here now, compared to the days when Zaino was the precursor and only one that was years ahead of its time...

I have not used Gtechniq but have not read very favorable reviews about it either..

The hottest most talked about coating is Car-Pro's at the moment, I believe...

The most durable coating and what I put on all 4 of my vehicles over 3 years ago, is Optimum Opti-Guard, now Opti-Coat Pro, and I am so glad I did it but wish I had done it sooner.. This stuff rocks !

No Coating except for a good Clear Bra is ever going to prevent rocks from chipping paintwork.. Its a few microns thick at best while a clearbra is many more and more durable.

Perhaps a coating might help prevent an object from taking paint off a little, if its slick enough perhaps to help deflect a flying object from taking a full direct hit on your paint, but no one has ever really tested this that I know of..

Then there is the opinions on which coating has the most Gloss over the others and it goes on from there...

So, once you decide what you want to get out of any Coating, you can then look at the ones available today and narrow it down further..

Since all of the appearances of anything put on paintwork is so subjective, it would be really hard for me to want to say that this coating is glossier than that one always, etc., so Im not even going there..

I can just tell you that my 3+ year old Optimum Opti-Guard is going strong, looks amazing to me when I wash it (which is very infrequently), is extremely clear and glossy to me, and has very little if any scratches in it after all this time...

I do not do Anything to it between infrequent washes, dont put any toppers on it, and there is no "regeneration", etc., products that are suggested to apply to "renew", etc., it..

I wash it with Car Pro Reset car wash soap which came out recently and is made for washing coated paint.. It seems to leave the finish really smoother compared to other soaps I have used that had things in them..

I am not even sure how long it will last, but I heard once that Optimum had it still on their test vehicles some 7 years hence.. I have not had time to verify this...
Its been so long that it came out, I think that perhaps David Fermani might have been involved with this way back then??

Good luck with your research !

Only ones I have used are pbl, and uk.

UK seems thicker, PBL is easier to apply and more forgiving.

Both look great.

Both will get wax over em :)

I am a big fan of coating, especially when you want the protection but are running short on the time required to do the "up-keep" on a sealant or wax.

I agree with Dan and also have OC pro on my truck. It is IMO the best coating for thickness and long term durability. But most of us can't get OC Pro. OC 2.0 is a good option in that case.

I really like CQ org & CQUK. If you considering Gtechniq I would highly suggest CQ only because of the questionable results and review on Gtechniq stuff. I had CQ org last over 2 years, and CQUK is at 9 months at this point and still going strong. When using ReLoad & Hydro2 you really could see years of protection. Reset soap is awesome as well. I am working towards a review of it.

The PBMG "coatings" are to new and have unconfirmed durability IMO. I have the PBL ASC and the glass coating that I am playing with and testing. So far they are super easy to use and work well. Its just a different type of product when compared to other coatings like CQ, C1, OC.

And I will add that everyone with a coating should try Sonax BSD (Brilliant Shine Detailer). It is IMO more of a spray sealant as it is not really to be used as a wet car wipe-down product. But the beading / sheeting is amazing and made to work with these coatings.

I think this fall I may have to try on these coatings from Optimum or from Car-pro, both sound great and would make my daily driver pick up a lot easier to deal with.

Another vote for CQUK. I have it on my personal GTO and have done a couple customers cars with it. Getting ready to do a silver 2010 Mustang over the next couple days. Once you get used to applying it, it goes on nice and the benefits will show themselves when you go to wash it.

Steve how are you!!!

Joe is a rookie, what does he know????

J/K I actually spoke to Joe last night and great advice as always.

Hey Dan,

He so it was a toss up between OC and UK.

After doing a little research I was much more attracted to UK.

Hey Buddy,

Yea PBL is defiantly good stuff, I have that on my wifes MDX right now.

Hey Troy,

How do you like that PBL ASC I sent to you? I had that on my wifes last car.
But being so new, we never got to see a full durabilty of the product.

CQUK + Reload 2014 (when it comes out), for now just use the Reload that comes with the CQUK kit.

Yea I ordered the kit with reload. What is reload 2014?

I think this fall I may have to try on these coatings from Optimum or from Car-pro, both sound great and would make my daily driver pick up a lot easier to deal with.

Goodluck, seems like both are great!

UK FTW:rockon

It was easy to apply and seems to be okay. But I can't really decide if I really like it yet due to a few things. The first is durability; it is so new there is no way of knowing if it will last the 2-3 claimed years. The other is beading / sheeting. When I compared PBL ASC to CQ or CQUK the CQ product are superior IMO. Another mental issue I have with PBL ASC is that it seams like I'm applying a WOWA sealant and not a coating, even though you have to do all the same work and prep.

Right now I have the ASC on half of my car and comparing it to POLISHANGEL Famous. I will say that after using Sonax BSD on top of ASC I am really liking it. But I am sure that is the Sonax BSD.

Troy,

You say that the PBL coating products (I have both and am experimenting with them currently) are a different type of product. What is the basis for that statement? Is it something to do with the chemistry, or more the way they apply and act in use? If it is something to do with the chemistry, I would really like to understand it.

Thanks!

Ted,

I can't speak on the chemistry as I don't know everything that is in these coatings. But the more I research and learn, the more I realize that some of them are what I would consider a true "coatings" because they do bond to the surface like paint, while others are more like "long life sealants" since they act more like a traditional sealant IMO.

I think for me it is more of a mental issue I have with PBL ASC. It seams like I'm applying a WOWA sealant and not a coating since it is a spray & wipe process, even though you have to do all the same work and prep. Where as with OC, CQ, CQUK you are dripping product onto an applicator and wiping it on. Witht the drip method I feel like there is less air involved in the mixture. Also OC, CQ, CQUK seem thicker to me when working with them.
