To buy, or Not to buy? 3" DA backing plate.

Time 2 shine

Okay so i need to get some small pads like the 3" and 4" to work in tighter area's and was wondering how well the 3" Megs backing plate and 3"or 4" pads will work with GG6 compared to the 3"griots polisher.

I have the 3"GG polisher. It does work and can get into some really tight spots. But the power you get from a full size DA is no comparison. I normally will put a 3" plate and pads on my PCxp when doing thin body panels or rocker panels. I would start with the plate and pads for your GG6". And if you need a smaller polisher then look at the 3".

I also usually have to run the 3" polisher at a speed of 5 or 6 to get it to really polish.

I agree with Troy on having to run the GG3 on 5 or 6 to do anything, but it will do its job pretty well. I've taken the backing plate off of the small one and put on the GG6 and hated it. The GG6 is such a powerful machine that it just pancaked the pads and made the machine feel very unstable and unbalanced. I think 5 inch pads are as small as I want to run on that machine personally, but many love to go smaller. I just don't see the need since the GG3 is a capable machine for doing small areas.

Edit - I also should add that the GG3 takes some getting used to. It doesn't like a lot of pressure being applied. I've found that applying medium pressure at first, then lifting to let the pad actually spin at speed will produce better results than trying to force it to cut.

Groits 3" polisher with 4" pads?

If I was to buy a 3" Groits polisher for spot correction (understanding that I have never used a polisher before) can I use CCS 4" pads or CG's Hex-Logic 4" pads on the GG polishers 3" backing plate? CCS and CG's seem to offer more pad options than Groits two 3" pads.

Thanks,
Jim

I now use my PC exclusively with a megs 3in backing plate

I used to switch from large to small backing plate when needed. grew tired of that and eventually picked up a GG6. so the GG6 is now the real workhorse with the PC being used for tight areas or sanding headlights

Had my hands on the GG3 for a few mins at AG boot camp. without having the specs in front of me, i believe a PC with a 3in backing plate is more powerful than the GG3. however, the body of the GG3 is smaller so it can fit into tight areas better

The old PC 7336 has the 4" pads on it permanently. The Griot's uses 6.5" and the Cyclo gave up its pads to the PC! Now it scrubs carpets like a Big Dog!

The GG3 isn't a powerful machine, so the PC would definitely have more power running the same size backing plate. I wish a company would make a polisher the size of the GG3 but with twice the power. Flex should build a forced rotation 3 inch model with a small body..that would be a killer machine.

Hi Jim. The 4 inch pads will work on the 3 inch backing plates no problem. :bigups

Todd,

Again, thank you for your response here and to my PM. Placed order this morning and after some practice I'll order the Porter or Groits 6" polisher. I think I'm hooked.

Jim

Kevin Brown, aka BuffDaddy, sells some killer Mirka backing plates that are awesome for 3" pads. :bigups

Those look really nice. My problem with running the backing plate from the GG3 on the GG6 is really the small pads compressing into a pancake just from the weight of the machine. That scares me because it feels like the backing plate is digging into the paint through the pad. Looks like that backing plate would solve that issue.

It is slightly undersized for 3" pads but obviously you still need to be cautious and evaluate the panel your working on
