Tires won't come clean

My boy drove his Chevy Colorado home on leave from Ft Carson Colorado, he frequently drives into the mountains with it. The local car wash there sold him some tire gel which combined with 4 wheeling left a yellowish film which I can't get off.

I've tried westleys and APC, his froiend tried gas. The westleys removed some but there still is about 50% of this film left, any ideas??

Yea if a heated powerwasher and some good degreaser dosen't get it off I'd defiantly looking into product damage. Go back to the guy that sold him the gel and ask what the hell is in it and why won't it come off

The film is embedded in the tire and yes maybe it did discolor it. He can't remember what the gel was called, I'll have him ask when he goes back this weekend.

I don't know the prodcuts that you've mentioned, but have you tried a strong alkaline wheel cleaner, like Eagle1 A2Z, rather than a degreaser?

This happens with gel type tire dressings that sit on the tires for too long without being cleaned. I clean a lot of exotics, which sit in peoples garages for months and months with dressing slopped on their tires and this happens a lot. The only thing that will take it off is a solvent like laquer thinner. A general purpose cleaner will also work using a stiff brush, but a solvent will work much quicker.

Sounds like a solvent based dressing used on dirty tires. Or just solvent based in general. Seems to seal in the dirt. I've dealt with this many times from dealer auctions. Another coating of dressing, even water based will return them to black for awhile.

I have used mineral spirits (Varsol) and a stiff plastic brush, repeat 2 or 3 times and then clean with a strong APC and rinse. Then use water based dressing.

The solvent will remove some rubber (color) so be warned that i do not know the long term affect. But never heard about any problems.
