Tips on using *FLEX*

Hello,

I've got the flex 3401VRG and 6.5 & 7.5 LC Velcro pads. I had a PC originally but the place where I bought the FLEX from says Flex is too strong for 6.5 pads so he recommended 7.5. My questions are:

1) Can I use 6.5 pads on the flex? What should I be careful about?

2) Should I just use 7.5 pads for majority of the time?

3) On a PC, I do speed 3 or spread out the polish/wax then go to speed 6. What speeds should I use on the flex?

4) What other tips would you give knowing I had experience with PC already.. How different is it in terms of 'technique' when using Flex vs PC?

Thank you!

John

I would reccomend using nothing bigger than a 6.5inch pad. The standard Flex backing plate is 5.5 inches so with a 6.5 pad you will get only slight overhang but a 7.5 IMO is a little too much. I use LC 6.5inchers and they work great. I spread polish on speed 1 and then usally do one pass on 4 and then bump it up to 5 or 6. I never owned a PC but you should know the Flex is a lot more powerful. Just keep the pads flat and apply even(not to much) pressure and work steadily. The first time I used my Flex it took me a while to get used to it but after about 20mins you should be polishing fine. Be careful using LC pads especially orange on contours because you will get a bit of skipping.

You really should go with the 6.5 pads. The 7.5 pads were recommended for the flex when it came with the bigger backing plate. If yours comes with the new 5.5 backing plate, 6.5 pads is the way to go.

Thank you, dsms and detaildoc. I will go home and measure.. I *think* it's the 5.5 one... it's a velcro backing plate. thanks.

I have a Flex and I use the 6.5 pads that came with a Pinnacle Bundle I purchased a few months before. The pads work fine. I do not try the larger pads. Too much wobble.JMO

BTW, could someone tell me:

1) where to connect that black round handle that came with the flex? For the life of me I could not find where to screw it in. The manual does not tell you, either...

2) How come it came with 2 extra screws? Are you supposed to replace them with the ones that are already on it?

Thanks.

1. Use the allen wrench to remove the screws that attack the grip handle on the Flex. Take off the handle.

2. The round handle then screws into one the holes, one of the spare screws goes in the hole on the opposite side.

At least that's how I did it. Now whether it's right...

I recommend that you first try the front grip handle that already comes attached and see how you like it, then try the side handle. IMO, the front grip handle balances the weight better and it is much more ergonomic.

Thank you, Maca and Detaildoc.. So I don't need to even take out the original Allen Wrench screws if I just use the front grip handle then?

Maca, I still don't get why I need to replace the screw on the other side if I only take out the screw on one side and put the round handle in... Why can't I just leave the original Allen Wrench screw on on the other side?

Are you referring to the CCS pads? I used a white CCS pad the other day for the first time on my PC and it felt like it wanted to "pull" around some.

I have a Flex in the mail with some CCS pads so I'm curious.

Yea I use the 6.5 CCS pads. Skipping is not a serious problem but it does like to pull your around a bit with the CCS pads, especially a tougher foam like orange and around the contours. White is usually fine and the grey pad is cake.
