Thrifty Vs Fifty Ep 3 : Meguiar's Clay Bar Vs Speedy Surface Prep Towel

Hey guys, this is the third episode in a series of videos I'm making called Thrifty vs Fifty.

Essentially I'm comparing two products that can do the same function: one with a low price tag and the other with a high one... and to see if the added price is worth it. Hence, the thrifty vs fifty.

I'm not just going around finding the cheapest and most expensive options out there and comparing them. In my eyes, that comparison would be useless. I am comparing two products that people on forums have highly recommended for a certain task and then if they have big enough different price points, making a video comparison.

Today's episode is on clay vs clay alternatives. Meguiar's Clay Bar vs Speed Surface Prep Towel.

I've done a review on the towel itself, but not a comparison between the towel and a clay bar.

So without further ado, here is the video:

Thrifty Vs Fifty Episode 3

Conclusion:

Both products work very well.

A pro of clay is that you can see contamination in the clay.

Pros of the towel include easier to clay larger surfaces, you can drop the towel, reusable, no wasted time on kneading.

Simple answer: If you clay a lot, get the towel. If you clay once a year or less, get the clay bar.

Advantage:

The Speedy Surface Prep Towel gets the advantage nod from me, because of the reusable nature and the speed of the towel to clay.

Hope you guys enjoyed :)

Good review, I tried the towel for the first time yesterday and I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not buying one sooner. It is perfect. No worrying about dropping it in the dirt, no leftover clay residue, faster work time. I love it, I'm probably going to buy the fine grade towel as well.

Nice video. You clayed like a mad man in the video :)

I haven't tried the speedy prep towel yet but I plan to try it soon. The initial pricing is what has kept me away and the fact that I have 4 more clay bars to use up.

Thanks for watching :bigups

The reason I keep mentioning fine grade for the towel is because people have mentioned marring with the medium grade. Have you noticed that?

Hahaha the powers of 4x speed lmao :lmfao

Yeah, I think the initial price is why most people don't use either the nanoskin autoscrubber or the towel. But if you clay periodically, like most of us on here, the towel becomes cheaper than clay within two to three years. Even faster if you normally buy something like Pinnacle clay for 20 dollars or clay customers cars.

Thanks for watching! :yourrock

The towel can marr depending on how aggressive you get with it on soft surfaces. However its extremely easy to pull the defects out with 1 polishing pass.

Is it just me or does anyone DESPISE how hard it is to store? First the MF takes awhile to dry, then the clay material sticks on everything. Pretty ridiculous, but the towel makes up for it on express/fast decontamination. I still like clay for fine contamination as a follow up.

I've never seen my fine grade mar any surface yet.

Also, I just hang it up in the garage. It's actually really easy to store if you have some pipe or something you can just wrap it around.

I hang my towel from my metal shelves with small clamps to dry, then fold it and put it into a Ziploc bag. I do not have the same problem with the stickiness on mine as I had with yours, Woo. A little tacky, but not like pulling taffy.

Another disadvantage of the the towel is the difficulty in getting into small spaces like behind door handles and around the curves on front bumpers.

I'd agree it can sometimes be difficult, but what I do in times like that is no longer fold the towel but rather just hold the corner of the towel and use it like a small clay bar :)

Nice review. I think everyone here that doesn't have the speedy towel wants to get one. They have really proved to be a longer lasting product that doesn't get ruined nearly as easily as the clay.

Thanks and I have to agree! And also/or the nanoskin autoscrubber! I can't wait until someone has both of them and compares them... would make for a very interesting comparo video

Nice review. I've used the towel but not the autoscrubber. I would think the autoscrubber would have a lot more areas that it can't get to more so than the towel. So you would also need either a towel or clay if you use the autoscrubber. o you might as well just have the towel IMO.

I agree completely. Not to mention you are stuck if you don't have a power source.

I'll order both soon just to compare. I think between both it would almost eliminate the need for clay

That problem will be fixed very soon...new product coming out...hehe..Ill be testing it and reviewing it soon.

Wait, what?! Speedy Towel is made by SM Arnold?? Is Nanoskin owned by SM Arnold?

The Speedy Prep Towel is made by NanoSkin for SM Arnold...SM Arnold make tons of car care products. Btw I use the NanoSkin Auto Scruber by hand with a attached Velcro backed strap if I don't use it on my DA.
