Things (and people) that tick me off

Mr. Clean

The Man Who Knows The Man
and the list seems to grow, but one of the more annoying are the seemingly endless list of people who butcher the singing of the national anthem. Most often it is because they try to trick it out and it just doesn't work. It is a tough song to sing, and sing well but if you take on the task (AFAIK it isn't mandatory that you do) then by golly do it right! Little Big Town did just that tonight at the Cotton Bowl. Nice tight harmonies not a strain or a forced note. Thank you!

On a game note, the Aggies are off to a fast start.

Funny you should bring this up. My wife and I just had this conversation a couple of weeks back while attending a High School Basketball game. My take on it (my opinion only) is that in many cases the performer can't commit their voice to the hard notes in one dedicated breathe. Rather than attempt this and either end up sharp or flat (embarrassing), they take their artistic license and run their voice up or down the scale until they stumble across the note they are trying to hit. I agree completely on the part about it being a difficult song to sing but when it's done well it's worth paying attention.

I see this very same thing by a variety of artists attempting to sing traditional hymns. Rather than a thing of beauty it turns out to be something very different. Vocalists with a truly pure voice is not the norm in today's world of voice synthesizers.

That is a good explanation of what takes place on occasion. :)

True singers with talent are becoming the ones that have trouble attracting the media attention.
A lot of 'music' now is about selling the package deal for the cameras and the networks.

HAHA, you must be referring to darius rucker the other night...he sounded worse than terrible tryin to sing the national anthem.. But i hear he's great in concert..

*cough*Steven Tyler*cough*

Don't let that man near the National Anthem for any reason whatsoever. TWICE now he's screwed it up (that I know of for sure) at some pretty large events.

The people you need to get after are the ones that select these singers. These singers are artists so they often feel the need to modify it.

Our anthem is a tough one. It is a poem put to the music of an old drinking song. I'm not a fan of the butchered anthems, but I imagine that the performers try to put their spin on it since they are usually on a national stage.

Canada still has a prettier anthem than us. There, I said it.

don't get me started ..

bad refs who don't know the rules of little girls rec basketball ... ok almost got thrown out again today for yelling at a young incompetent :D

pro refs that are so busy running to be ahead of the play that they don't see the play ...

pre-game shows that just :blah: :blah:

women sideline reporters at football and basketball games that have never played the game

I better stop :notme:

No, I missed Darius' rendition. I do like him though he has got some great songs out right now.

No problem with modifications, just those that obviously don't work. Oh and know the words! They didn't just pull you out of the crowd and put you in front of the mic. Practice!

Oh Canada? Really? Nice song I guess and maybe easier to sing but not really anything that I would choose to just sing just because. America the Beautiful, now that is a pretty song. Fairly easy to sing and it paints a really nice picture.

But none of them try to sing the national anthem? :D
