Wow the back end of that car looks disgusting. How about we put a bigger spoiler hanging off the *** end. That thing has to add 3 feet to the length of the car. You almost need to hang a little red flag off the end to let drivers behind you know just how far it sticks out!

The purpose of an automotive spoiler is to disrupt, or spoil, the airflow over the car to improve performance. The device came into general use in the early 1960s sports racing cars. It is now common on production cars.

Aerodynamics

Aerodynamics is concerned with airflow moving over the vehicle. The easier air flows around the vehicle, the less fuel and power it takes to achieve the same performance. A rear spoiler is part of a complete aerodynamics concept.

Drag

Drag is air pushing against the vehicle as it moves. The faster the vehicle moves, the more drag, which requires more power and fuel to maintain the speed. A spoiler's purpose is to reduce drag.

The Back

Depending on the design, the rear of the vehicle can produce drag. If the back is flat, air pulls against the back of the car. To reduce or eliminate this, a spoiler located in the correct position will improve the airflow. The spoiler increases drag, but may reduce more drag than it produces.

Air Dams

Air dams on the front of automobiles are spoilers. Air becomes turbulent on the underside of the car and an air dam spoils the air by redirecting it to the side of the car.

Spoiler or Wing

A spoiler and wing are not necessarily the same thing, although they might be combined in the same unit. A wing is like an upside down airplane wing that provides down force to the car.

It not all about looks when your making a drag car.
