Obsidian black or any other black for that matter is shiny and dark to the point where you can't clearly see the lines of the car most of the time. Flat black however is PERFECT.. not shiny and lines can easily be seen, it just looks a little too futuristic maybe...In any case, I've got some pictures below for reference, but my question is... does anyone have a full custom paint flat black G35, look at the pics if you wanna see what it looks like on a whole car... thats a Benzo and a Rolls down below in flat black, now I'm not standing up for Flat Black usage on such high end luxury cars, but sports cars should definitiely get into it... I just got my Nismo front bumper installed and painted the 2 inlets flat black and matched my grill with flat black as well, leaving the Infiniti logo chrome... Now I am very much considering powdercoating my 18 inch OEM wheels to match the stealth mode I'm trying to go for. (at least until I get my 19 inch Mayas) I'm also gonna get the black headlight overlays batmobile style, and smoke the rear tailights...

My car is a brilliant silver by the way... would flat blacking out the wheels be overkill or just perfect??

by the way, the question earlier.. has anyone done their whole G coupe in Flat Black... if so... PICS PLEASE???

that damn CLS looks like licorice candy, I jus wanna bite into it!!!!!!

From a detailer, it looks terrible. Reminds me of a primered Civic. Might as well get the "under construction" sticker for the windshield.

Regarding "losing the lines", you don't lose the lines in a graphite or silver car or even a metallic black. Car manufacturers choose silver for most of their ads for this very reason.

Autopia: Thoughts?

Although I don't care for it so much, I think that the flat black paint can have its place. Albeit limited. Since, you mentioned the primered civic look, this paint makes me think of Skunk2 an import tuuner performance parts manufacturer. This "stealth black" finish is sort of a trademark of theirs. This trend was interresting when it was limited to show vehicles (imports, etc) or vehicles going for a nestalic flare (think rat-racers). As far as being used on high end BMW's or Rolls', the effect is lost on me. I would much rather see an intriging new color or something with so much depth that you just want to stop and stare.

I don't really like it. It seems like the car is still "under construction". It looks alright on the Rolls Royce tho.

I think it makes the car look kinda mean. Looks tough to me. Would I want a modern car with it? Probably not, but I do like the look. Now if I had an old Hot Rod or something....MAYBE. Perhaps it's the lighting, but that CLS looks wicked to me.

Kinda looks like it needs a good dose off lacquer to bring the shine out IMO. :D

Plus, you gotta be careful - one hint off polish, and it does actually shine ; so that's something else you won't be able to do :shocked

It looks like a plastic toy. I don't much care for it. I have noticed that more people are gettng their show cars in flat colors and I think it looks cheap and unfinished. :(

Not feeling it on the Rolls.

Matte seems to be a trend with some grip in the motorcycling area. Many helmets are coming in non-black matte..My full facer is 'Antracite Matte'

Harley has some less shiny colors they call 'Denim'..e.g. Black Denim and I like it..usually as a two tone with a glossy golor

Not a fan at all, but it usually takes me a while to catch on. So if this becomes popular in 5 years, I'll probably come around in 10 years, when the trend is waning.

Seems you either love it or hate it. The real test is not how it photographs, but how is it in person? The already large Rolls must take on massive proportions.

I agree it looks more like a matte finish. A flat black would show hardly any reflection.

Personally, I think it looks neat. I just love how it makes the reflection sorta dissolve in the Rolls.
