the colour red

i say red as ive had experience with this colour, but could be any i suppose? Ive owned 2 cars in red and both have suffered from i think is called "oxidization". IE: the red starts to go pink/white. Now both have been solid colours with no clear coat and after a fine cutting compound and wax, the red is restored in all its glory.

Thing is, what happens is your colour fades and has a clearcoat? obviously you cant cut the top layer as its not the colour? or does the clearcoat stop the colour fading in the first place? or does red paint never have a clearcoat? anyone provide an answer, cheers , mark
 
Red will always be the worst color for fading due to the pigments in the paint. All colors fade but none quicker than red.



Clearcoats are designed with UV protectants in them to prevent fading. As long as the clearcoat is well maintained the color coat should be fine. Waxing protects the clearcoat and the clearcoat protects the color coat.
 
Red is the best color to detail older cars. Its amazing seeing the life you can bring back to a faded, older red automobile...



My red 3000gt's paint was in pretty poor shape when I purchased it, it the right sunlight it gave a orang-ish hue. Vehicle has a clearcoat in some panels, some others it doesn't...



All panels respond very well to abrasive polishes that bring out sparking red paint. Car often gets mistaken for a 2000+ vehicle, when I tell people its a '92 they wonder if its been repainted.

Mine is 13-years-old and I also get compliments. The guy at 7-11 asks me at least once a week if I am ready to sell my car!
 
Red is the most photochemically reactive of all colors. The introduction of clear coat paint systems helped alleviate this problem.



Red is also the most expensive color of automotive paint.

Red does shine up well. I recently detailed my uncles 11 year old truck. Wash once a year, seriously. Turned out good as new. His jaw hit the floor.
 
Its just such a shame that Honda use such utterly dire paint these days :angry The amount of stone chips I have picked up, just from normal driving, are incredible :(



I remember, my old '91 crx which used the old style (non-environmentally friendly :rolleyes: ) paint, was in better condition at the front than my 99 Accord :o Damn water based thin rubbish :nixweiss
