Test Drove An 02 Lightning

Ok I've been looking to pissibly trade in my 00 Mustang for a truck in the near future (a few months) mainly because my wife has a huge love for furniture and I always end up having to borrow a friend's truck to haul it.

I went truck shopping. Yestersday stop was at the local Ford dealer. I looked through their stock and I found a brand new Black 02 Lightning. $34,000. I though well thats not to bad since these trucks are supposed to be so awesome. I asked for a test drive and off we went. The salesman demonstrated the treuck to me first by doing 95mph in a 35mph zone  when I seen that I told hi, "I'm not laying any cash down or purchasing today so don't get a speeding ticket." His reply was, "These cops know what we are doing don't worry!." Luckily we never passed any cops. I'm sure he would have spent the envening with Bubba if caught doing 95mph in a 35mph.

Anyways then he let me drive. First thing I noticed when driving through a poarking lot was that the truck sounded really powerful. Also it has a great stance. Then I pulled onto the open road and gassed the truck from a 20mph roll. There was just a little wheelspin and off we went. The truck prettu much rocketed to 70mph very quick, however it was very decieving (spl?) because I could not hear the motor at all. Basically it sounded like the truck had no motor and just a supercharger. The wine of the S/C was very loud in the cabin. The truck also seemed to be about to drop it's rear diff anytime because it was making terrible scraping and whining sounds all through the drive. I don't think it was because it wasn't broken in yet either. One more thing the Transmission in the truck shifted great just like my old 5.0 Mustang with a shiftkit did. Very muscle car like shifts.

The truck also has great brakes it would stop from 70-0mph without any problems actually quicker than my PT Cruiser stops!

However the build quality of this truck was a disgrace, the radio stuck out about 1/2" to much on one side of the dash (like it was installed crooked) the cover for the airbad on the passenger side stuck up about 1" the seats felt like sitting on a plastic bag and the door handle almost broke off in my hand.

My Mustang seems to be built WAY better than this truck. Other than that the truck is excellent and has a nice factory warranty as well (I would hope so onsidering the 5.4 has MAJOR oil leak problems) a nice truck overall I would say.

However for $34,000 I will just wait on the real beast. Around this time next year the Dodge RAM SRT-10 should be about to debut with a 6-speed trans and a NA V-10. I'm going to hold out and try to pick one of those up. I have driven some of the newer RAMs and their build quality seems much improved and most definitaly better than Fords.

No bias here folks, just wanted to share my thoughts and impressions of this truck with everyone.

hey dustin, which dealer, paul miller or man-o-war? i wouldn't take a lightning (or anything else for that matter) from man-o-war if they were giving them away, much less than buy anything from them. to many bad experiences with those folks.

i did see one at dealership in winchester the other day. i thought about going over and looking at it but i didn't feel like getting attacked ;)

It was Paul Miller. I'm with you I wouldn't touch anything at Man O War. The dealership you are probably talking about in Winchester is Cole Ford. Thats where we bought the 2000 Mustang. They are nice and won't really hassle you :)

I may come over tonight if that's ok with you. I have to go out of town and not sure if I'll be back before 10 but if I am I'll give you a call first.

That was a good review. :up I really want a Lightning. I think I'm going to look for a 99 model though. They cost less and personally I like the tail lights better. Those clear tail lights look good on the IS300 and certian other cars, but they don't belong on trucks. I think it makes em look to ricey. Not exactly what I would want to do on a 30K truck. I like the old SVT wheels on the older ones too. I figure that as long as it has the same motor under the hood then the rest is just asthetics. :) Still, its a godly truck. The Dodge one will be nice too. I don't think I can wait that long though. <drool>

that's cool, i'll be around all evening.

i think i saw that lightning on the lot at paul miller now that i think about it. i believe they had it setting right in the front entrance to the main showroom.

I've already heard reports on Ford's response to the Dodge SRT-10. In other words, I'm going to wait to get my Lightning :D and I'm not getting the SRT-10 since the new L's will blow it away.

*cough* 500hp in an L *cough*
