Terry Cloth- Stupid Question.

I know this may sound stupid, but I've checked with some very smart folks I normally hang out with, and they give different answers. What is a terry cloth?

Some tell me its my regular bath and shower towel.

Some tell me its like a bath towel, but softer. Like you would use with a baby.

And some tell me it's a "tea towel". The kind I use to dry my dishes.

I think this shouldn't be this confusing.

Terry cloth is woven fabric with the surface covered in little loops. Some people use terry cloth for tea towels, but most don't since it tends to lint more than flat fabric. The little loops tend to make it absorbant, especially when it is made of cotton. The stuff made for regular towels is often 100% cotton loops with a polyester backing. It's stronger that way, but the polyester scratches cars. Some microfibre cloths are terry cloth, because of the little loops. I hope that made sense.
