Taping

I recently polished my car for the first time with a PC. Per the advice given here I taped off all of the trim with blue painters tape. When I finished and tried to peel the tape off, some of the tape was hard to get off and/or left a sticky residue behind.

I live in central Texas and its been running close to 100 degrees (over with humidity). The car was washed late at night and put in the garage. All polishing was done in a garage. The tape was stuck on the most in the places I worked the hardest, i.e. top of the windshield where I was trying to removing marring from a sunroof air dam.

Is this standard? Should I have moved the car outside to warm the tape up and make it easier to pull off or would this just leave more residue?

I'd think the added heat would make things worse.

Be sure you use real 3M brand tape, there's a big difference between it and the cheaper stuff. Some 3M Adhesive Remover or AIO oughta clean things up without causing any problems.

Did you use house painters tape or auto masking tape. Auto masking tape is made by 3M specifically for automobiles. I got some at Walmart

i apply more pressure at the side of the tape where you'll come in contact with it more and less pressure on the other side. thus, making it easier to take off all together.

Definitely use the 3M lime green auto masking tape, it comes off easily even if it has been on for a long time or out in the hot sun.

Although tyhe green tape is great it doesn't stick to Zaino when I'm trying to tape off a section for spot work.

I'm not sure if this is a good thing or bad thing>

haha, that's pretty cool actually I didn't know that Zaino prevented the tape from sticking.

Thanks for the help. I'm not sure of the brand. I bought it in the home depot painting section when I was painting my house.

Can you buy the green automotive version at a car parts store or is it something I will have to order online?

I'd be careful with the stuff from the Home Depot, it sounds like the stuff I got at Lowe's that made an *AWFUL* mess when I used it on a car. I spent forever with the 3M adhesive remover cleaning off all the residue.

Try an autobody/paint supply place, they'll have it. I did see the green tape at Lowe's though, so maybe it's becoming more common. But just using the 3M brand (even their blue house painting tape) will be a big step up over using lesser stuff.

I bough blue tape (3M) and apply to one wall I was painting. When I tried to remove that was a task.

It looks like 3M makes some mistakes and applies the glue (standard glue) to the blue tape.

Since that day I double check any new tape to be sure it is the right glue specially if I am going to use on my car.

:2thumbs:

Have Fun!
