taping off a tire

Is there a convinient way or product to tape off the tire/rim to be able to quickly repaint them? I have a couple of fleets 40-50 trucks, their rims get pretty banged up and would it be extra revenue if I could efficiently repaint them. Also any advice or tips on how to speed up the fleet wash, this part of my business is picking up, unfortunatly with fleets its quantity and quality at a small price, meaning efficiency is key.
 
I have used back in the day vasoline on the tire and on the rim part i didnt want to paint and wipe off when i was done. Could you make a template out of cardboard half size of rim and shoot half at a time,basicly a shield. Good luck.
 
The cardboard idea might work. Just use a piece that's big enough so that you can cut a 15, 16, 17" (or whatever size the wheels are) circumference out of it and still have enough cardboard to cover the tire. You can also get painters tape that has plastic attached to it, but I think it would be way too expensive and time consuming to do it that way.

I 2nd this,Vasoline will workout Great...Get the generic brand to save Money
 
Vaseline may work, but that would just create a lot of work having to clean it off after. Am I missing something?
 
I used the vaseline trick one time on an old POS truck that I owned, I applied it with a parts cleaning brush and painted the rims. After dried I then simply power washed off the vaseline and from what I recall the tire looked brand new afterward. But I do know that petrolium products do tend to deteriorate rubber. Good luck,TD

The cardboard method you recommended, how ya gonna hold it in place as you spray paint?
Talkin bout creating alot of hard work.You ever tried to get paint off a tire.:passout:
 
I think I may go with the Vasaline, I'm not really worried about them deteriating simply because the get rotated and changed often enough. Thanks for suggestions

Go to one of them Dollar Tree like Stores, you know tha ones were everything is made in China(kinda like WallyWorld)and everything is a $1:bigups

After you have completed project.Go to DIY(non-peak hours) and hit those tires with full strenght APC get an "Old" brush(I always keep those for Crap like this) after you are done pull vehicle out.
Then PLEASE clean up after yourselve,the next customer will be unaware of your Vasoline Slick you have laid down:hotrod:...It could be yours or mine Mother,Father,Sister,Brother,Son or Daughter:rockon

Edit: sjr is also doing some fleet work.
 
On the note about rims i wanted to make some circles for different size rims so when i use spray products on tires i can shield the rims from overspray.Maybe put two holes in them for your fingers and spray away. Just a thought.
 
What about a plastic garbage can lid? You could cut the rim size out of the middle, and it should be sturdy enough to stand on its own leaning against the tire or with very minimal taping. If you found one with a long enough lip, it might even wedge a little under the tire helping to hold it up.

The company that makes "dust shields"(Idon't even no if there still in biz) use to sale those.....I had a 15" &16"(this was in the 80's before monster wheels were out), all they were was cardboard with a handle cut out...............Why didn't I remenber these:wall:wall:wall I still have them somewere:thinking.....

We use to use them when appling dressing to tires, maybe you could measure rim and make 1, then maybe put a little vasoline around the edge of tire in case you slip:notme:

So I took a plastic garbage can lid, cut the middle out of it(the size of the rim)so I was left with a ring. Now I can take that ring and simply hold it around the rim and spray away. I still have a little tweaking to do to it with a butane torch to mold it to where it basically clips onto the rim, but it is exactly what I needed.
