Talk to me about wool pads.

AMDin93103

I like cheese.
I came across this link on Lake County's site and wondered if this is the extent of different wool pads offered by any manufacturer.

Does anyone have remarks about the LC Wool in the link?

Any remarks about one brand of wool versus another?

Anyone want to spout off about wool in general?

TIA.

Hello...I recently used a Lake Country 41-005 Fast Cut wool compounding pad with a rotary set at 1200 RPMs to remove some "cloudy" white paint from a repainted hood. I had tried all of my LC foam pads but none were really giving me what I wanted. This is a serious pad. I ran a couple of rings of Hi-Temp Medium Cut around the pad and made a couple of passes. The hood came out great with results I wanted, except some crazy swirling! This pad is VERY aggresive, but I got the results I wanted immediately and after buffing with a PC and some Hi-Temp Medium Cut on a LC Polishing pad, the paint was near perfect with no swirls. I wish I had the wool polishing pad to try...

I can't remeber where I got my wool pad from 3 years ago.

I've only had to use it a few times, and those times were for extreme fading.

click the links for my Integra below. The 1st link was a combination of polish's/cleaners/ The 2nd link was soley a wool pad with Diamond cut (x2)

I've got some other pics of terribly faded carbon fiber hood that I revitalized the same way, but I still have to upload them to my site.

I haven't come across a situation where a wool pad was called for.......so far.

I do use it on the PC as a backer for terry & MF bonnets.

LC has some "foamed wool" pads that I'm very happy with. They are not as aggressive as 100% 4-ply twisted wool. I have a meg's pad like that though.

I also have been using a Black Lambswool pad that Anthony O turned me on to. It's from Optimum and again while not as aggressive as 4-ply twisted wool, it doesn't lint and polished out very easily.

4-ply twisted wool is the most aggressive wool cutting pad (and shed's the most lint). I only bust mine out on some serious marring or water spots.

I came upon American Buffing's product line showing yet more wool products. I took the liberty of combining both of the company's wool pads into an aggressiveness list, based on how I understand the physical make up of each. . . and how their respective companies and you state :) The part numbers that begin with <40 are from American.

FWIW, I was looking for a distributor/retailer on the west coast for convenience reasons; emailed both companies twice last week and received NO reply. :nixweiss I will be calling LC but does anyone know of a number for ABC or distrib for each over here?

their tuffed foam pads might be a better choice

Have the orange and yellow, used 'em maybe a half dozen times but wasn't too impressed with them. Seemed to have a lot of sporadic contact with the victim. Polish didn't spread very well on the pad, more was absorbed up into it rendering a good portion of the polish wasted and pad ineffective. WannaFBody, MorBid, what did I do wrong?

Good account of your experience, thank you. I think I will pick up a Wool/Acrylic Knitted, Electrified Sheepskin, Lambswool and a 50/50 Twist/Untwist. . . burn through a few of my need-to-be-repainted test panels and see what I like. Will report back.

Sorry to just jump in, but would a lambswool/ acrylic blend polishing pad remove swirls left behind from a 100% twisted wool pad, without leaving swirls of its own?

All the lambs wool pads I've used need to be followed with another pad. Most all wool pads will put in some swirls that's what they do. The swirls being put in by the wool pad(s) are easier to take out than the one's you started with.

Now there should be a wool polishing pad out there that doesn't cut. I say this cause I know some old time painters that still finishing out the new paint with wool pads only.

Holly Cow. I didn't realize that many wool pads existed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's crazy. :getdown

I own 1 wool pad and that is a 3M. I have only used the pad on severly, and I mean SEVERE finishes. I used to do work for a limo company and found my self using wool on there vehicle 50% of the time because their wash techniques inflicted many DEEP swirl marks that only wool would remove. On other occassion I use a wool pad for removing deep scratches from a truck that drove through a heavily wooded area. With that said I dont get to big into the different kinds of wool pads because 99% of the time I use foam pads.

I have a twisted wool from about ten years ago, and that is about the last time i used it.

Has anyone tried the Rockwool polishing wool pad from Top of the line, i think it is a Lake Country pad.?

Question for Blue-Sun, The 2nd link was soley a wool pad with Diamond cut (x2) - what machine were you using and details - speed, etc?
