swirl removing by hand

I'm going to try and remove some swirls on a white acura integra this weekend by hand and have DACP and 3M SMR for dark cars.Do you think it will be OK to use the SMR for dark cars or should I go get some swirl free?Also,what type of applicator do you recommend.Scottwax recommended some light blue viking cotton towels from pep boys but can't find any here in orange county, CA.
 
You should not use SMR for dark colors on your white paint. Auto body supply stores do have the SMR for light colored cars. Just remember to try to work the product long enough to break down the abrasives as well as you can by hand. If its still wet you have not broke the abrasive down enough or you used way too much product. I have also heard of those that used white 100% cotton towels folded to palm sized. Keep in mind that 100% cotton towel would be aggressive. You could try a cotton applicator and if that doesn't get it done move to the towel.
 
I'd consider using Meguiars Swirl Free Polish-it a pretty darn fool proof swirl remover. By hand or machine, the stuff is amazing.



It is better to use a terry cloth towel instead of a terry cloth hand applicator because the cloth will have a deeper nap and you can also refold it as the product builds up and dries on the towel.
 
Scottwax,I was unable to find the light blue viking towels but found some white 100% cotton viking towels.Do you think these will be as affective as the light blue viking towels?
 
Scottwax.... I need to know what applicator you use for Vanilla Moose. I have ordered 2 pints and am concerned about using a proper applicator. Which brand? And where do I buy it?

Folded terry-cloth towel is a tad more aggressive than using foam, but that's not the main benefit of using it. It's the even-ness of pressure you get with it that allows you to remove swirls by hand without causing more damage. With regular applicators (foam and terry-covered), you're applying the product with small "pressure-points" that'll cause marring.
