2001 Corvette:

Body Shop needed the interior cleaned up with just a wash/wax on the exterior. It was heading out for an auction the next day. The Interior was a DISASTER. They told me it "wasnt bad." Needsless to say, this was the last car I was doing for this shop.

2006 Lexus IS250:

This car was a complete MESS. Owner just wanted optimal protection/gloss form the paint and the interior completely "disinfected." When I went to go pick up the car, it was full of the owners garbage which I had to remove and clean up. I had no idea a person could drive around with some much random junk in his car..

Nice cleanup on the Lexus interior :).

Have you thought about a suitable animal-hair brush to clean out the dust inside the vents? I myself am still looking for a good brush. I hear some people use those tiny black foam applicator swabs attached to wooden sticks, sold at Home Depot or hobby shops...:wavey

As a good gesture, you should tell this client to take heed of the driver rubber floor mat issue, as a precautionary measure. Let's say the gas pedal is not hinged to the ground (It's hinged to the...firewall area). Now push the pedal down with your hand, and then push the thick floor mat against it so that the pedal catches against a rib in the rubber floor mat. Uh-oh. Gulp. Stuck accelerator pedal.

I drilled 4 holes in my rubber mats and used some long Zip Ties to secure the mat to the seat railing thing under my seat...to prevent the rubber mat from sliding forward as fast. Sort of works.

Or, your buddy's Lexus is probably covered under that free Toyota/Lexus recall, where the dealer can fix the potential issue.

Anyway, sounds like the clients were pleased!

Nice work.. but it looks like you forgot to clean the pedals on the 'Vette....

Wow. One person seemed to have just parked the vette in the middle of a dirt field and left the windows down an d the other person seems to live out of his Lexus.

Nice cleanup on both the cars! They look excellent now!

If it's one thing i hate it's people telling me "the car isn't in bad shape, or the interior just needs a quick vacuum" and you get there and it looks like someone had a food war or a grenade went off.

Thanks! Those floor mats have little hooks on the ground that prevent them from being pulled up onto the pedal.

I wiped down the pedals, but then I got in/out of the car with some dirty shoes, and the body shop owner had on muddy boots. The plastic stuff on the carpets just WOULD NOT come clean. No matter what I did to them.

thanks though.

Thanks! Yeah, the cars were disasters! Both of them ran the whole "the car isn't in bad shape" routine before. There were some disputes on the bill, but whatever.

What kind of disputes, if you don't mind sharing?

Reminds me of something another member mentioned in a different thread...something along the lines of "It doesn't matter to a customer if he pays $50 or $500 for a detail. He can quibble no matter how much he paid--he just wants the car to be perfect...even if he paid $25." Something like that :o (Not saying that's your situation, but I thought it could be relevant)

The lexus was not that bad, the owner understood and was overjoyed with the condition that I had it in. He was more than happy to pay me the extra, plus a little tip. :2thumbs:

It was along those lines. It was mainly with the corvette. I had been doing work for the body shop for a few months at this point, and I was giving them a pretty steep discount to begin with because they were sending me a lot of simple volume work. At the same time, a lot of the work they were sending me was trashed and destroyed interiors that ended up needing 4+ extra hours outside of the budgeted time. To add to that, they were starting to try and get me to lower my prices even more, threatening that they would send the cars to someone else. So, before the corvette detail, I met with the owner of the body shop and told him that I would start charging a bit extra for every trashed interior they sent me. This was the first one they sent me after I explained this to the owner, so I charged them extra because the detail went from being something that was supposed to take 5 1/2- 6 hours to a 10-11 hour detail. Why? Because when they told me they had a car for me, I asked them what kind of condition it was in, and their response was, "Well it just needs to be cleaned up a little, nothing to major." Mistake on my part for not going out to look at the vette before I picked it up. Normally I don't have anything wrong with putting an extra hour in to finish things up and make sure everything is more than satisfactory etc.. but at this point I had put in an extra 4-5 hours! The body shop saw a HUGE problem with this for some reason, and the owner threw a fit :argue stating that I was ripping them off, blah blah blah, and at that point I respectfully told him that I was not interested in getting work from them anymore and that I felt it was fair for an extra charge seeing as the interior was pretty trashed and filthy. I no longer get volume work from them, which I guess is a bummer for me :sosad but I was not gonna let them try and drive my prices even lower and complain to me about extra charges. This was the first volume work I have ever done, and now I know what NOT to do when setting up volume work.
