I'm in need of a wheel cleaner that will work on some medium to heavy accumulations of brake dust, but here's the catch. I need to be able to find it locally.

I normally use either EF HI or Griot's Wheel Cleaner, but am out of both. I'm not familiar with the commercially available products at Target, Pep Boys, etc., but I do know that most of them are really bad for alloys, being too strong or akyline (sp).

Does Meguiar's have anything? By the way, how's their vinyl/rubber protectant (41?)?

TIA

I second that...it's the first wheel cleaner that you don't have to really work at. The first time I used it, yes...I did have to spend a little time working on each wheel, but after that...you really can just spray it on...wait a minute and hose off with a strong spray. I've got a Mercedes with alloys and believe me...they're tough. A2Z makes them MUCH easier...and it's available at the big autoparts stores.

I'll make another vote for A2Z. I've used it on some really nasty wheels (friends' cars - heh). If the grime doesn't come off with the first shot, give it a second light application and scrub it a bit. Regular maintenance then, is a snap.

I recently tried out A2Z, to compare it to my long-time favorite P21S Wheel Cleaner, and it works wonders, costs less, and is available at Mass Market chains (Walmart).

I still love P21S Wheel Cleaner, which is more gentle on painted or chrome wheels.

When using A2Z, just be sure not to let it sit too long, it is not ph balanced so you need to hose it off after about 30-60 seconds. Even then, I have found that you will need to use a soft towel or sponge to get all the gunk off that the A2Z loosens up.

Yes, they do. I like #36 Wheel Cleaner or Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner. As far as the protectant, #40 Vinyl & Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner works great to both clean and protect from UV damage. I prefer the more natural matt finish that it leaves too. The #42 has been discontinued but is a great conditioner if you have found some. Hope this helps...

I have not tried the Griot's wheel cleaner, it is claimed to have a major endorcement, just how good is it?

A2Z definitely. I found some on sale at Big K for 3.88 a bottle. Bought 6 bottles. The stuff works amazing.

1. Spray on dry wheels

2. Leave on for 60 seconds and then wash off

3. Wash the rest of your car

4. The last thing I do is use a sponge with the leftover car wash or soft OXO brush to remove any remaining residue. At this point I also use a little brush to get any hard to reach spots.

You will come up with your own system but the stuff ROCKS! Non-Acidic tool. Wonder what's in it?

Give Mothers a try. Yellow bottle for clear coated or painted rims and the red bottle for chrome. I use the yellow on my BMW's wheels. Just spray on and hose off. Great stuff. Give it a try.

I love the eagle too. I read somewhere that it is harmfull to clear coated wheels. Can anyone comment on this? I stopped usimg it because of what I heard.

P21S isn't nearly as good.

I read exactly the opposite. It is one of the only non-acidic cleaners out there.

"This product was completely reformulated by Eagle One in 2002. It is now a 100% acid-free cleaner (the old A2Z was acid-based). We've had numerous reports from satisfied customers that Eagle One has maintained A2Z's cleaning punch while making it safer for the wheel's surface."
