STOP what you're doing!

I can agree with it to an extent. You guys are thinking like autopians. The majority of people washing their own cars are using any old rag they find on the garage floor and any sort of soap they have handy. They are not comparing it to a washing like we'd read about here. They are comparing it to the average Joe.

I just looked at a car for a brother firefighter who took his car to the "gentle, all cloth car wash"....

Apparently, someone ahead of him lost the car's antenna, which lodged in the all cloth rotating brush, which in turn put some lovely deep scratches on the hood, roof and trunk lid.

The car wash claims it is not their fault...:angry:down

LMFAO... No reference or appendix at the end? No description of what media was being used?

I can see how some people would fall for this though. The idea of handwashing has a bad reputation. Many people have scratched the paint surface of their own vehicles by improperly washing them.

I'd agree to some extent with the article. Honestly, I've never hand washed my car, and probably never will, I have faith in my trusty hogs hair brush ! :xyxthumbs

oh, i would have a field day with that in small claims court.

all these car washes that say "we arent responsible for: blabhblahblah" right, a carwash (yeah yeah, before i knew better, lol) scratched 2 of my aftermarket wheels.

After a slightly heated discussion, they wound up paying to have them refinished.

those signs mean pretty much nothing, they ARE responsible if thier machine breaks your car.

Hahaha! I use my :getdown.

ZaneO,

You beat me to this! Its a joke of a "study". No methods are mentioned, yet they write it as if its Scientific.

These Machines would Flog the hardest Ceramic finish.

Cheers,

So after reading it, I'm left wondering what the difference is between the "gentle action of cloth pads" in the car wash and the media and soap the "average joe's" used. That is the only factor that is different. Unless they are saying the hand action (and possibly scrubbing) is causing problems.

As stated above, the worst thing in a carwash is the dirt/junk left over from previous vehicles.

Also (maybe I'm stupid here or something), does the study refer to automatic car wash tunnels with all those spinny clothes and hanging curtin-style clothes ?

One would think that the least damaging car wash would be an automatic touchless... Sure they don't always get the car 100% clean (although I've personally never experienced an issue), but nothing other than liquid ever touches the car.

No doubt it was funded by automatic car wash owners / manufacturers.

"The International Carwash Association working through a special Carwash Research Foundation Grant to the University of Texas at Arlington, Texas, has conducted extensive car washing tests this past year to determine the effect on car finishes by comparing various car washing techniques ranging from professional car washing to the bucket and sponge used by many auto owners."

You got it.

Plus you have to wonder how well their water reclamation system really filters and cleans the water they use on your car.

This happened to a guy I work with, but in his case the car wash fessed up and covered the $2,000 in damage to his Benz.

Good news! The firefighter who's vehicle I examined contacted the corporate offices of he car wash, who agreed to pay for repairs!

He will be getting the damaged surfaces repainted in the spring.

coincidently, as I got home from work today my neighbour across the street was washing thick dirt off his truck with a brush on a stick - not even connected to the hose. He might have had a bucket of sudsy water about, but I couldn't see one

What a bunch of crap.

What I don't understand is how those stupid cloth flaps beating the car to death inside the car wash are any different then me rubbing my vehicle with a grout sponge? If you notice there is alot of evidence showing how bad hand washing is, but no evidence proving how swirl-o-matic car washing is any better.........

The study really doesn't even make any sense.
