steps confused

mine is a carbon black bmw. I have had it for more 1 year. It has some swirl marks on it( something like webs) . I used to wash the car with a spong. :o I got the car wash shampoo and wax from wal-mart.

wash and wax, that all my friends do.

until I found autopia:up, there is lots of techniques, and products that I have never heard of.

I have read some of the posts for some time. I start to understand what the good products are. but I'm still confused.:p about the procedure of cleaning each time and the use of products.

1. wash -> polish-> wax or sealant. shine:cool:

all i know is you don't polish everyweek.

so, the next time, all I do is just wash and wax or sealant?

2. polish (SMR, IHG,GEPC, klasse all in one, and high gloss sealant)

if i use klasse all in one then high gloss sealant, do i need to use SMR, IHG and GEPC before? i read some post people tend to use all these(SMR, IHG, GEPC) together. that made me confused.

almost all the products, I mention above can't be find in canada.:(

:bow

Kenji..

1. (maintenance of your shine) good quality car wash > bbwf > perfect drying technique > QD > smile

2. (paint protection either sealant or wax) to get the big smile at the end of step 1 you must prep the paint. Clay, SMR, IHG, GEPC prior to the Klasse twins will properly prep your paint.

Hi Kenji, where in Canada are you? Filling out the LOCATION field can help, especially if there are members from the same area.

You can find 3M or Meguiar's polishes at auto parts stores, body shop supply stores and as a last resort Canadian Tire (Meguiar's through special order). You'll have to do some hunting around. All the rest of the stuff you will probably have to import.

I think Pecs means the Big Blue Waffle Weave towel from CMA by "BBWF". :nixweiss In any case, you can use either a waffle weave (not just the BB) or the perfect drying technique, but you can't really do both. You just wash it as often as you need to (QD after is a good idea but not critical). Re-apply Klasse every few months or whenever you can't stand not waxing it. :D I also highly recommend the California Car Duster (CCD). Using that and QDing once the weather improves will be the best way to keep your car looking great without washing it twice a week.

Klasse AIO/SG are the steps that apply protection ("wax"), so they are needed after polishing the paint to your satisfaction. Swirl removal by hand is difficult and very time consuming, though possible. Hopefully SMR will be enough depending on how deep your swirls are (sponge washes can do horrible things). Skip the IHG as this does nothing to fix the paint and is a pointless step with the cleaning AIO. GEPC is an optional extra polishing step, but nice I hear. You can probably get the S100 equivalent of this up here somewhere.

Have you considered the S100 carnauba wax? Great stuff if you don't need the hard wearing qualities of the synthetic Klasse, and you can also get this in Canada.

I am from Montreal. Just updated my info.:D

I think the only products I can find here in Montreal is 3M( not all )

I am looking for a PC.

but, those in Canadian Tire dont look right.

the one in Reno Depot is too much.

any suggestion?

:bow

if evitable, I don't want to order stuffs from The States. expensive, and the wait is killing.

:)

Oh good, maybe you can try PMing Taxlady, who is also in Montreal. She doesn't own a PC but she might know some local stores.

I would be very surprised if 3M is all you can find. Usually Meguiar's is more common...

To find a PC, I'd suggest calling up local power tool stores or building supply stores. Check the Porter Cable website too to see if they list official dealers. Sometimes a place can order it in if they don't stock it, but there can be a wait. If you find it for something in the neighborhood of $175 you're doing very well. :up You want the 7336 model which is not sold at CT. Then you'll have to find the Meguiar's backing plate and pads, or just order the CMA kit that includes it. If you want a good selection of pads I would just order through CMA. Even if you call everywhere and price it out, I bet you'll find it's about the same if not cheaper through CMA.

Thanks again.

I can order P21s stuffs. but, too expensive. for a P21S Bodywork Conditioning Shampoo is like around 40 cnd and wait...

I will check Canadian Tire for Meguiar's tomorrow.

actually, for the PC, I don't know which model is good.

but, I have seen Makita 9227 in Reno Depot. this is the only thing i have seen. there are some others in Canadian Tires are cheap cheap... my freind has tried it. wast money..

:(

That Makita you mentioned is not in the same animal kingdom as the PC - totally different. You want only the orbital model made by Porter Cable. Read this for an explaination http://www.properautocare.com/basporcab74p.html but you still want the 7336 model, not the 7424.

Those other cheap buffers are just too much of a tradeoff to be worthwhile.

EDIT: this page may be more useful http://www.properautocare.com/porcabuldetm.html

thanks again.

i will check the local stores to see if i can find it.

thanks for your help again agian and again. :bow

Coastal tools still has the 7424 with the 5" mounted, but includes the 6"c/w, polishing pad, and contour pad for $119.99 (in US)

Heck of a deal......

Lowes are doing a PC for $109 with the natty white foam pad :P

My usual steps are wash/dry/clay/DACP/SMR/#7 and S100.

You can get a bit more complex with a seperate paint cleaner and a polish, up to you.

I tend to bugger about a bit more with my own vehicles just to see what works with what.

Customers vehicles I stick to what I KNOW works and is reasonably quick to do.

p.s. S100 is cheaper than P21S and you can get it from any Harley Davidson dealership for $14 a tub!
