Stepping up to the plate

I am moving on up to the big leagues.

I have been a weekend warrior for years and now have been giving an opportunity to buy by cousin's establish detailing business. :p

The take over will take place December 1st 2003 so any help or ideas for drumming up work for the winter months let me have them. The shop is located in CT. I am defiantly sweatting the winter season, I have some overhead bills now. :shocked

Congrats on becoming a business owner. I'm hoping to start one of my own soon. I've been taking a few small business courses at my local community college. Just FYI the business will not be detailing. With that said, I'm not a professional detail nor a business owner. Obivously. I'm also not trying to be a smart a$$. But, have you:

Looked at the books for the existing business?

What's the revenue during the winter months?

What current advertising does your cousin do?

How effective has the advertising been? (i.e., what's the ratio of new customers per advertising piece and for advertising $)

How does your cousin retain and entice customers in the winter?

Developed a business plan?

Ask your cousin why he's selling?

The business plan will cover all of these bases plus a WHOLE lot more. It's an important tool to let you know if the business will work. If you don't have one, stop now. Go the library or bookstore and pick up a book. There's also software to help. I have a copy of Business PlanPro 2003. I haven't used it yet. So, I can't tell you what it's like.

Best of luck and keep us posted!
