Steel Wool and Chrome Polish To Clean/Remove Rust?

Has anyone here heard of this?
Does it work?
Can you actually apply chrome polish with steel wool?
What's the strongest chrome polish available at a local store...maybe Turtle Wax Chrome Polish & Rust Remover?
Do chrome polishes work on aluminum as well?

I'm trying to remove oxidation, discoloration, and rust from an old motorcycle...

Sorry for all the questions, but thanks for any help!

Having done this to an old Honda a year or two back, I think I can toss in my two cents worth.

Yes, you can use 0000 steel wool with chrome polish and unless you rub hard, you should not have any damage.

I have no idea what is strongest, but Mother's chrome polish worked good for me.

I wouldn't think chrome polish would be a good aluminum polish.
Here again, Mother's aluminum polish worked good.

Thanks Charles.

I tried a little bit of Mag & Aluminum Polish the other day. Had just a small bit, and it worked alright, but the terry towels I was using just came apart and started shedding when I hit rough areas (rust), so I need to use something else (steel wool, machine...)

If the rust is that bad that it is tearing up your towels then it might not be able to be simply polished out. How deep is the rusting?
