steam cleaner - extractor - or both??

Sooner or later, I am going to need something to clean the carpets and seats of our cars. I was thinking about getting a Bissel Little Green or something similar. But then I read a thread about “real steam cleaners (Saeco Piccolo was mentioned as one that worked well and was inexpensive). Which works better, or are they just different tools for different types of problems. If so, what to use when? Also, just wondering – if you use the steam cleaner, where does the dirt go? Would using the steam cleaner followed by the little green with just water be a good approach?

The Little Green and the Saeco Piccolo are two completely different machines. I have both, but have yet to try the Piccolo. Hopefully this weekend I will. The dirt from the steam cleaner will "melt" off of the surface, but on carpeting, it wouldn't have anywhere to go. So I don't think the steam cleaner would be the best tool to use on carpet.

I prefer to use my Little Green with just water. I spray on a cleaner/shampoo, and scrub it with an upholstery brush, spray water from the LGCM, and then suck it out. I spent over an hour doing this to my driver's side floormat yesterday. :) It looks great now :up
