Steam cleaned Rims - Stuff flaking off??

I steam cleaned my Konig rims (alloy) and all around the inside of the rim, this clear plastic coating started peeling off. It took me about two and a half hours to steam it all off. I think it is some kind of plastic coating that they put on the rims? About the thickness of two layers of saran wrap. It just melted under the steam. I hope it wasn't the clear coat? All the other rims seem ok. When I had it all steamed off, the rim was really shiny underneath but the other three rims looked just as shiny and they didn't seem to have any coating that I could see. I got these rims about 6 months ago. Did they forget to take some kind of protective coating off the one rim or did i just wipe out my clear coat?

Try a cleaner/wax in an area. If it turns the applicator black, you have removed your clearcoat. (Which is what it sounds like happened.)
