SSR 2.5-- PC vs Rotary

Detail time!
Hey everyone. I was curious to see the differences between SSR 2.5 with the PC and the Rotary so I did this little test. I have the PC 7424 and a Chicago Electric Rotary for now. I used a 7.5" Wolfgang Polishing pad for both sections with a bead of SSR 2.5 around the middle of the pad. FPr the PC I used speed 5 to work the product in and then brought it up to 6. For the rotary I set it to speed 2 (don't know the RPMs) and then cranked it up to speed 4. I worked both products in for about a minute and a half on the trunk of a Mustang. There really isn't too much of a difference in my book and the pictures don't show the exact finish but it's very close. The purpose of this is to show a side by side difference between the two machines and give PC users some hope! All it takes are the right products and some patients with the PC and you can get great results. BTW I'm still somewhat new to the rotary and I'm sure with a finer polish I could get the finish 100% swirl free but that wouldn't be good for this side by side test. The first pic is before of the trunk lid, the second is with the PC and the third is of the rotary. Let me know what you guys think!

just remember which ever type machine you use or by hand that the SSR's need to be thoroughly worked to achieve maximum results. Many times people stop short and don't let the diminishing abrasives completely break down and then work the remaining polish as a final polish. Those who do and understand this are the ones getting the results that can be topped with their LSP's.

Thanks for the comparo, budman. The rotary will cut your time way down . I've been using a PC for 2 yrs now with great results . But sometimes a rotary is a must..

Whats for final analysis on your test ?

I worked the 2.5 in for the right amount of time in my eyes. I'm sure if I did another application the swirls will be non existant but I didn't feel it was necessary to spend the extra amount of time on it with this car. As for the rotary, it was my first time using it with the 2.5 and I found it to be quicker yes but a little messier. The polish didn't seem to 'rub in' for a long period of time which I feel is okay for an abrasive polish. I'm used to #9 and SSR1 and like polishes for using the rotary. For the little extra amount of time I don't think you can beat the results with 2.5 and the PC. Maybe if I used the rotary with another polish (i have to get Optimum sometime soon) I would get quicker results but the PC was easier and less stressful on my part. I finished up the 2.5 on the rest of the car, SSR1 and then finished it off with EX-P. Its too dark now for pics outside and the car is going back to the owner tonight so I'll see what I can get for pics.

I tend to prefer pad dependant polishes with the rotary, they tend to lubricate the pad better, have longer working times, and be generally more effective at producing an even look to the vehicle finish. Abrasive polishes can be used but I prefer using polishes that are designed specifically for rotary use (powergloss comes to mind) on the makita because they give you enough time to work it in how you need. If a PC at speed 4 can break down a polish quickly then it doesn't stand a chance with a rotary.

Yup I totally agree with you Tuba. The final pics are just quick ones but kind of show the results. I wish I could get some better ones but this was just a final cleanup before it is stored for the winter. We'll see if we can get pics in the spring!
Pictures- disclaimer: the lighting doesn't give the honest results but thats all i had to work with at that time-- I blew out 2 of my Halogen lights...--
1-Close up of Rotary side
2-Both sides
3- Nice and Clean engine!

Thanks for the replies!
