SS Paint

She'll Buff Out
A friend of mine just bought a 1970 corvette convertible. Only has 42k original everything. Very very nice car. He wants me to go through it next weekend, has some oxidation, spider webs ect. Sense the paint is ss and all fiberglass, is there anything i should be careful of (this will be my first ss paint detail) ? I know im going to get paint on my pads but is it the same as polishing cc paint or is the paint thinner and easier to burn? I have a few polishes for ss, does wax matter? Any pointers would greatly be appreciated.

Unfortunately I have limited experience on SS paint but my "virginal" job on a SS Ferrari a few years ago resulted in my comfort level returned when I tried a slightly less aggressive pad/polish combo to get used to it. Paint is paint i.e. clearcoat is simply pigmentless paint and I buff paint imperfections the same way whether CC or SS - reducing only that amount to get down to a level surface. The wise approach (as we've all come to know) is to remove just enough to level and no more. I've done maybe 3-4 SS jobs and have never had a problem. The most recent with my circular. I tape every crease, seam, high points etc. I do those by hand after I'm done with the machine. In my opinion you can't overtape. My Ferrari customer still talks about how incredible his paint looks.

I'll be following this thread to hear more of what the seasoned pro's recommend but my initial fear was almost immediately removed when I started mild and saw incredible improvements with that approach. It makes you nervous at first but you'll get over it quickly when you see how much it responds to this simple approach. You're right about paint transferring to your pads, especially on the oxidized areas but don't worry - it's a necessary byproduct of the effort with SS.

Good luck, have fun and let us know how it turns out. Be assured that many of us have busted our cherries on SS paint and have experienced the same reservations!!!

I cut my detail teeth on SS paint...its quite easy to work with IMO..Check you PM I'm going to send you my number lets talk and I can walk you threw it...plus I might like to see the car...sounds nice!!!!
