Speed 6 on porter cable destroys my pads?

Hey guys,



I've noticed your guys' reccomendations as well as personal experience that only speed 6 will remove defects with a porter cable.



The problem though is that I keep destroying my pads!!



I used to use edge velcro pads and the heat literally deteriorated the velcro so on the pad so that it wouldn't stick anymore.



I tried moving to the edge 2000 system but now, after speed 6, I notice a bunch of black grease/gunk in the center of the pad as well as the pad not being able to rotate anymore (i'm guessing the glue from the inner plate on the 2000 pad came apart from the pad causing the pad to wobble strangely...etc)





I recently purchased some lake county velcro pads...but i'm scared I'm going to destroy these too!!



Can anyone offer any insight?



Also, what is the BEST way to clean the pads?



I use dawn or simple green but I noticed it deteriorate the glue in my edge 2000 pad!!

You shouldn't be creating that much heat with a PC... ideally you should have almost no heat to speak of on the pad. I use the 2 sided Durafoam pads personally so I can't really offer you any advice on what to do.



As for cleaning I just use my APC and water to get the residue out after each use... if the pad gets really caked up I have one of these:

Just turn the PC on its back in your lap, set to speed 5 and apply a little pressure to the pad w/ the brush. Works wonders.
 
I think it's just that your pads are sh!t.



I've gotten a *ton* of uses with either my 5" LC CCS pads or 6.5" LC regular pads. Always on speed 6, with dishwashing liquid to clean them after every use.
 
What kind of backing plate (does EDGE use backing plates? I forget) do you use?



Well, I know for a fact that speed 6 does create a lot of heat, and there have been documented cases of people's pads getting melted or severely deformed. I had a similar problem when my backing plate was getting too hot, and the backing plate itself was beginning to separate. It was some weird brand, Autoquip. I contacted Autogeek, and they sent a Lake Country backing plate replacement for me. It also came with a washer, one made out of computer motherboard material. I haven't used it yet, but I'm wondering whether the washer really makes are large difference in terms of preventing excess heat transfer.
