Speaking of IP and FP

I used both IP and FP on my wife's Honda to get rid of some water spots that had been on the car since new (it is a 2001).

The polishes did a good job, about 75% of the spots are gone....

My question is, I would like to apply the IP and FP again (PC applied with a speed of 5, 5.5), but I am worried I am getting close to going through the clear coat.......... any thoughts on this? Am I worried about nothing? :nixweiss

pwalk, do you have access to a direct drive polisher like the Makita? That's when the Menzerna twins really "shine".

No Tom P., I do not. Just got the PC 2 months ago, have used it several times, am very pleased with results.

I am sure a DD polisher would probably create a 'better' shine, but the best part about the PC is, for a novice like me, it is almost foolproof, and the results are great!!!!:xyxthumbs

Thanks for the response jgv. Just as a general question, jgv or others, how many times do you think you could apply IP and FP with a PC before you would worry about getting through the clear coat?

I know it varies from paint job to paint job, but I'm very interested in this too, at least generally - i.e. you could polish with FP 20 times before it became an issue, or it becomes problematic after 3 or 4 times, etc.

How long do you plan keeping that car? I'd say, it's worst for the paint washing the car in a brush auto-wash as people does, than polishing it like that twice a year.

I'm sure that you could use FP with a finishing pad more than 100 times without being dangerous to the paint. (why would you anyway? :nixweiss )

Thanks jgv, I was a little worried that taking these water spots completely off would mean I was going through the clear coat.

Once the spots are gone, I would think FP once a year, twice at most, would be more than sufficient. I never use any type of car wash. My first job ( at 15 years young), I worked at a car wash. I know what goes on there........

The Honda will be kept for a few more years at least. After my wife gets tired of it (2 more years probably), my daughter will get it.

Not saying I would, just a general curiosity on how much polishing is too much - I had some water spotting and hit it with DACP twice, then IP, and FP.
